  • Page 12 I Hi: WESTERN CAROLINIAN Criticism of Carter, Student Senate Dear Edit. I am writing you in hopes of clarifying s potentially misleading information in your Oct. 2b editorial. 1 realize that most of the editorial is only opinion, but the less facts it does contain do not reseal the whole story. For Instance, you mention that loss unemployment existed in the democratic administrations, while the opposite was true in the republican administrations. Let me remind the Carolinian that the Democrats had a lull scale ssar going m Viet nam to help keep the economy strong. President Ford does not hast a ssar going to help keep the unemployment figures down. President Ford realizes that short term public employment programs, like the Democratic Humphrey-Hawkins bill, only postpone the real solution. Therefore, he has focused his efforts towards eliminating inflation and stimulating private industry. As a result, the newly created jobs provide better income and eliminate the need for the federal government to add even more workers to its already sssollen payroll. The Carolinian also fails to point out the reasons for the recent upward trend in inflation, and decrease in take home pay. We have a Democratic congress which refuses to see the need for fiscal responsibility . For every deficit dollar that congress approves, the American people are again slapped in the face. Ihe Democratic party, which claims to be the ssorkingman's party, is actually slowly choking the American people. Also not mentioned was the devastating Arab oil embargo, which dealt the American economy a severe blow; a blow the economy is just now recovering from under the expert guidance of President Ford. This election is possibly the most important decision in our life. The outcome of this election depends on America's youth. I am confident thai America's youth ssill not be fooled by Carter's political rhetoric, but instead will vote for the man who most deserves our respect and admiration, President Ford. Truly. Mark Wilkins Dear Editor, The Student Senate is charged with the responsibilities of representing the student body. One of the biggest parts of this responsibility concerns the appropriation of Student Government funds. These same funds come from our activity fce--approximately $6.50 per student. This money is lo provide services for the students and to THURSDAY. OCTOBER 28. 1976 editorial HSan SEE,wkE ckM'/ that frqves that all TH06E AWFUL THlNleS r SA1DAJ30UT YOU ArETHJE.' sponsor activities of general interest, lt is also, in a small pari, to see that whatever special interest an individual might have he/she will be able to pursue that interest. In other words, if a group of students svas both immoral and irresponsible. pect some money lor their functionings if these functions would benefit the student body. The usual range of appropriation for Ibis type ol organization is from $50 to about $250 dollars. The other form of organization that we fund is one that will provide a service or sponsor activities of interest (we hope) to the entire student body. Into this category would fit the Western Carolinian, the Nomad, the Catamount, WWCU, Student Cos eminent Productions, Student Association for Government and Legal Affairs and the University Center. All of these organizations base been appropriated funds numbering in thousands of dollars. They provide every student on campus with a newspaper, a literary magazine, a yearbook, a radio station, concerts, speakers, movies, etc. The list could go on and on. Our money being spent on us. That is the way it should be. However, Monday night his authority or responsibility was grossly abused. We appropriated OES $340 for the publication of a pamphlet called Neo-Blackness. Nosv. it can be argued that this of interest to the student body and would benefit the student body. But, the great majority of students will not receive a copy of this publication that they are paying for. nor, in all likelihood will they ever even see a copy of Neo-Blackness. In the future our literary magazine, the Nomad, will receive extra funds to include this publication within their pages so that every student may enjoy exposure to Black literature. The 1976-77 issue will contain this special section. The 1975-76 issue of Neo-Blackness, however, will be published by OES, with $340 of our money, and copies will go no further than their membership and a couple of departmental offices. All we ask is that if our money is to be spent, that we receive at the very least the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of that expenditure. There is no printer anywhere that can give OES 7,000 copies for $340. We charge the Student Senate with illegally appropriating student funds and respectfully request that they either give OES enough money to make the 1975-76 issue of Neo-Blackness available to all students or that they give them no money--not even for the printing of one copy. Sincerely Nancy Hope Carrol Acuff Robert Wood And 17 others
