  • 6 Western Carolinian Features The Scoop: Meeting Lots Of Guys & Dolls... §>©®ffl All right, this week I needed a real story. Something that was going to happen. Something I could tell people about and tell them to go to. There it was staring up at me from the Feature Editor's desk. A press release: "TICKETS NOW ON SALE FOR POPULAR MUSICAL 'Guys and Dolls' AT WCU.'" I snatched it as it was being handed to another reporter. "MINE!" (I know a few theatre majors, it was my cup of tea.) Later I was at a friend of mine's party and she happens to be a theatre major. She often talks about "Guysand Dolls" and how much her legs hurt from all of the dancing she has to do. Well, it so happens that there were other theatre ma]ors there as well. Someone asked, "You've probably heard this a thousand times, but aren't you that guy in the paper?" So I said, "Yeah. Speaking of which, I'm doing my next column on 'Guys and Dolls' so is there anything you might like to tell me?" (Damn, I'm smooth.) One of them (and I won't name any names) told me that at first he was skeptical about the show, because he had been in the production before in his home town and it was awful. He seemed to have laid his fears to rest, though, and was in good spirits... especially good as the party progressed. Since then I have learned a little more about the production. Set in New York City in the '40s, "Guys and Dolls" involves two love stories about two gamblers who have very different ... these types of productions are the most important on campus... goals. Matt Maynard plays Sky Masterson, the debonair gambler who is trying to win the affection of the "prim-and-proper" Sara Brown (Sally Cox). The other story involves the efforts of Nathan Detroit (Sam Robison) to avoid marriage to his long time fiance and nightclub dancer Adelaide (Julie Hamby). As most of you know, "Guys and Dolls" is a musical. It features several song-and-dance numbers which have become classics. These include "Luck be a Lady Tonight," "I've Never Been in Love Before," "I Love You a Bushel and a Peck" and "Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York." The show is a joint production of WCU's department of Communication and Theatre Arts and Department of Music. Stephen Michael Ayers is director, Libby Trull is the choreographer, and Mary Kay Bauer is the music director. "Guys and Dolls" will show at 7:30 pm from Tuesday, February 14, through Saturday, February 18 at Hoey Auditorium. Tickets are already on sale and are available from 8 am through 5 pm at the WCU Department of Communications and Theatre Arts office (phone: 227-7491). Tickets cost $12 for adults, $8 for senior citizens, and $5 for students. I believe that these types of productions are the most important on campus, the reason being that so many of Western's students are involved. The collaboration of two departments—the coming together of two art forms— the voice of our students raised together in music and performing arts. It's earthshaking. I intend to be there.
