  • and chipped beef, we suggest cheese, beans, peanuts, bread and butter, potatoes, milk chocolate, condensed milk and coffee. Hiking Distances People are continually inquiring the distances to various points in the Smokies. The following mileages have been determined by the use of a metered bicycle wheel, which practice is recommended by the officers of the Appalachian Trail: Miles Brown's Station via Tobe's Creek to Sharp Top (locally known as White Rock) .... 4.8 Waterville via Chestnut Branch to Sharp Top 5.7 Messer's Cabin via Porter Flats to Dry Sluice Gap .... 5.4 Dry Sluice Gap, west on state-line to "Slate Top" ... .4 Cherokee Orchard to cabins on Mt. LeConte 4.1 Grassy Patch to cabins on Mt. LeConte 3.3 Cabins on Mt. LeConte to Myrtle Point 7 Cabins on Mt. LeConte to Mt. Alexander (the new Kephart) on the state-line 5.5 Newfound Gap to Mt. Alexander along state-line .... 3.5 Grassy Patch to Alum Cave 1.1 Auto parking ground on Fish Camp Prong to Siler's Bald 6.5 Auto parking ground on Fish Camp Prong to Buckeye Gap _ 5.2 Buckeye Gap, west along state-line, to Spence Field— 10.9 Hotel at Tremont via Thunderhead Prong to Thunderhead 5.5 School house in Cade's Cove to Spence Field 5.0 Spence Field, east along state-line, to Thunderhead .... 2.0 Myer's Lodge in Cades' Cove via Ekaneetelee Creek to Equa Nulty (formerly Ekaneetelee) Gap 4.0 Equa Nulty Gap, west along state-line, to Gregory's Bald 4.3 Myers Lodge in Cade's Cove via Fork Ridge to Gregory's Bald 4.7 These distances are accurate within one or two tenths of a mile and may be relied upon. Unfortunately they cover only a small part of the trails of the Smokies, as the wheels were obtained so late in the summer, it has been impossible to use them on all trails. 61
