  • Greenbriar, and in season the thirsty hiker may refresh himself with juicy huckleberries. From the top may be seen a splendid show of ranges and peaks. Take along food for one meal and plenty of water. Leave Saunders System at 8:00 A. M. Leaders: M. C. HORNER (Morn'srou>n) and GRACE O'BAUGH (3-7901). August 8 and 9 MOUNT GUYOT VIA COSBY Guyot lies in the heart of a virgin timber belt, and from its height one may enjoy beautiful views in every direction, both in Tennessee and in North Carolina. The mountains in this section are densely covered with balsam, and the best and only unobstructed views are to be had from the Guyot tower. The first of August on Guyot should prove a delightful experience. The groupings of the many species of trees and shrubs with the numerous evergreens will offer a particularly pleasing color study. Guyot trail is at first a gradual ascent over smooth ground along a delightful stream which rambles down the mountain-side, and this part of the trail is somewhat like the Gregory's Bald trail, only more beautiful. There are many shrubs and flowers, and an abundance of moss covers the boulders along the stream. After a pleasant tramp of more than a mile, the ascent becomes much more steep and reminds one of the Rainbow Falls trail on LeConte, except that it is not so rough. About the time that we think we are somewhat tired, we reach the first crest of the mountain and arc on the Tennessee-North Carolina state-line which we follow for some distance before making a downward dip and the final ascent to the main Peak of Guyot. Leave Saunders System at 2:00 P. M. on August 8. Bring food for three meals and be prepared to sleep in the open. A canteen and candle-lantern will be useful. Round-trip hiking distance is about ten miles. Elevation 6636 feet. Cost of transportation about $2.75. Leaders: BETTY HOFFERBERT (3-1847) and CHARLIE Gibson (3-3210). 41
