Growing and Progressing KNOXVILLE, with a population that now totals 149,000 people, in its metropolitan area, is the business hub of the Appalachian section, where the forces of industrial development and scientific agriculture have joined hands in a steady forward movement. The industries of Knoxville are diversified— the major groups being textiles and clothing, food and mill products, marble, lumber and wood-working, and metal-working— with a combined annual manufacturing output of $92,000,000. The trade territory surrounding has a complex that is a distinctive blend of agriculture and industry. East Tennessee is a land of promise, having raw materials for some of the greatest industries, an abundant supply of hydroelectric power, and climatic and soil conditions suitable to a wide range of agricultural activities. The most populous sections of the United States are near at hand and the transportation service is excellent. Low industrial costs and low living costs can be expected as a result of favorable economic conditions. “Knoxville Invites You!” is a 5-page brochure developed by the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce. While the brochure promotes the city, it also suggests its location as a jumping off point for visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Pages 2 and 3 of the brochure include a list of “short trips” and vacation sites, all of which are in the Smokies. Page 5 features photographs of sites within Knoxville as well as those in the Smokies. Several of the photographs are by Thompson Brothers, a photography firm located in Knoxville.
