  • the present time who are not taking a more or less active part in the work being carried on by the Club, none but that willingly shoulders a responsibility upon request. It is a privilege and an inspiration to be associated with such a group. Personally, I welcome you one and all to membership in the Club. Glad am I to greet you as' member of a fraternity who cherish the woods, the waters and the wild life of our land! To both neighbor and outlander we give greetings and assure you of a welcome in our midst, regardless of whether "midst" may mean a mountain-top or meeting- place to you. This year our Club is privileged to be sponsor for the fifth annual meeting of the Appalachian Trail Conference. In anticipating the visit of large numbers of compatriots, let us take this opportunity to assure you of a whole-hearted welcome. It will be a keen pleasure to greet you in June and to do whatever we can to make your stay pleasurable and worth while. Last but not least, the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club extends its most hearty greetings and warmest welcome to the leaders and man power of the National Park Service. Unquestionably, the establishment of a full- fledged National Park in this region will be a great boon to all people (both at home and abroad). Our organization has come to regard the National Parks Service as one of the Country's greatest educational institutions. We are certain that the coming of the Park will bring added prosperity to this section of the country, but it is from the point of view expressed above that we extend congratulations and a welcome to the new Park and its leaders. For some years our organization has watched with interest, yes, awaited with bated breath the establishment of a Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We are happy to have had a small part in the general movement. We sincerely cherish the wholesome friendships established. We are proud to have been in touch with the leadership of our State's Park Commission. And now, at a critical moment in the activities connected with the establishment of the Park, we bespeak the moral and unselfish support of all good citizens.
