  • the Chimney Tops, is plainly visible from the starting point, standing in sharp outline against the morning sky. Before crossing the river at Fort Harry Ford, we pause long enough to inspect the young Sequoia tree near the water's edge and then take up our irregular ascent. As we go upward, the virgin trees thin out and become more dwarfed, and the trail becomes almost perpendicular, making it necessary to use the hands and knees as well as the feet. Emerging from the timber-line, we perch ourselves on the perilous rock formations growing up from a carpet of sand-myrtle. The extensive view on all sides repays us well for the stiff climb. We see first Mount LeConte, King of the Smokies, and then Mount Mingus, Mount Kephart (formerly Mount Alexander), the Alum Cave Peaks, and numerous smaller mountains. The valley of the Sugarlands lies far below and contains the west prong of the Little Pigeon River and the ribbon-like road that is the new Indian Gap Highway. Leave Saunders System at 8:00 A. M. with an ample lunch. Round-trip hiking distance about five miles; elevation 4500 feet. Leaders: FRANK O. BARBER (3-2453) and H. C. AMICK (2-8664). September 5, 6 and 7 GREGORY'S BALD AND THUNDERHEAD FROM CADE'S COVE Drive to Willie Myer's place in Cade's Cove and jeave cars.
