  • last year found it not an easy hike, but one which furnished plenty of climbing and beautiful scenery in the valley below as you wound your way up the slope. The mountain is 5000 feet above sea level, about two miles east of Line Springs and about forty-five miles from Knoxville. Drive to Wear's Valley; when you get within about one mile of Line Springs, turn to the left and drive to the Huse-Lawson home (where is said to be the largest chestnut tree in the world — about 27% feet in circumference). Leaving the old Lawson home, you go up an old road-bed for half a mile, and then the climbing proper begins. Those who want to go up Saturday may spend the night at Line Springs by making reservations with Mrs. Belle Caton. Leave Saunders System at 8:00 A. M. on Sunday. Round-trip distance about nine miles. Bring food for one meal, and a canteen. Leaders: HUGH WEBB (3-7839) and MARJORIE SHIPE (6-1517).
