  • Cold Springs Mountain remains in its original condition, virtually untouched by the inroads of civilization, and is today reached only by trails which take one through areas of indescribable beauty. There are virgin forests of many kinds of trees with banks of vari-colored moss and wild-flowers. Swift streams plunge from rock to rock and gather momentum as they descend through the flower- banked woodlands. After reaching the top, one may see spread out before him the whole panorama of the surrounding mountain tops. There is an unbroken view from the Black Mountains with Mount Mitchell rising supreme in their midst to the distant southwest, where Mount LeConte rises over the fifty or more peaks of the Great Smokies. We shall spend the night at Gray-Stone, the end of the dirt road. It is an unused summer resort, and the buildings are in the hands of a caretaker. These buildings will shelter us for the night, though the necessary blankets must be brought along. The hike to the top is eight miles over exceptionally easy trails, and no one should remain away because of a sixteen-mile round trip. Leave Saunders System at 1 :00 P. M. Drive to Greeneville and turn off towards the mountains there. Bring food for three meals, and blankets. Bring canteens; the springs are not close together. Either leave Knoxville by 5:00 A. M. on Sunday morning, or write to John Oliver and arrange for lodging for Saturday night. Meals may be cooked in Qhver's Lodge or may be procured at his home by making reservation in advance. When you reach the gap in Rich Mountain, pause and look to the left and back. You will be rewarded with one of the magnificent views of the Great Smokies. It is Tuckaleechee Cove that lies below you. When you have 48
