reach Clingman's in about three hours. We pass from the pastoral bald of Siler's over much similar territory, then come into the spruce and balsam of Clingman's Dome over a gradual, but always upward trail. The startling whirr of the ruffed grouse, or pheasant, may thrill us occasionally. We may see some wild turkeys if we keep together and keep quiet at likely places. We shall eat lunch at Clingman's Dome and climb the tower for a view. Carolina's side is much burned over, but Tennessee's side is a delight with Mount Collins, LeConte, Guyot, Kephart, Siler's, Gregory's, Thunderhead, and many others in view if the visibility is good. But we shall be wanting to get back to Siler's and then back to the cars. You will know you have been hiking, but it won't be from fatigue alone; you will remember the beauties and pleasures the rest of the year, and you'll come back again. Meet at the Saunders System at 6:30 P. M. on July 3rd. Bring anything you like for the first night's comfort by the campfire at the parking place. Bring along two canteens or their equivalent, blankets, food for six meals, and candle-lantern. The trip, exclusive of eats, should not cost you more than $2.50 or $3.00. Leaders: BROCKWAY CROUCH (3-0310) and TOM DEWiNE (County 5211). July 5 RYMER'S FERRY Leave Knoxville Sunday, July 5th, at 9 P. M. for a very delightful trip of six miles across the North Carolina line to Rymer's Ferry. This is a trip that should be taken by both old and new hikers. Drive 60 miles, 16 miles asphalt, 38 miles good gravel, and 6 miles chert. This is a beatutiful trip and takes one over one of the most scenic highways in East Tennessee. Just above Calderwood a marvelous view of the Calderwood Dam and Lake and surrounding mountains gives one a thrill not soon to be forgotten. Just beyond, Gregory's Bald looms above you. At this time of year the rhododendron 37

In 1926, the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club began to print an annual handbook that outlined scheduled hikes for each month of the year, including winter. This 1931 handbook was collected by George Masa (1881-1933), a photographer active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor regularly-scheduled hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains.
