1 Western Carolinian March 16, 1995 Sports Coordinator Leaves WCU Football CULLOWHEE-Jeff Fela, an assistant football coach at Western Carolina University for the past five seasons, is leaving the Catamounts for a position at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. He will begin his duties as offensive line coach at William & Mary this Wednesday afternoon when the Tribe begins spring football practice. William & Mary is a member of the Yankee Conference and, like WCU, plays football on the NCAA I-AA level. Fela, 43, has served as WCU's offensive line coach for five seasons and has been the program's offensive coordinator for the past four seasons. Steve Hodgin, WCU's head football coach, says a search for an offensive line coach will begin immediately. "We will not be able to have anyone on staff as offensive line coach until after we complete spring practice. Coach (Al) DeGraffenreid (wide receiver coach/assistant head coach) will serve as our offensive coordinator in spring practice and I will work with the offensive line," he stated. The Catamounts will begin spring practice this Friday, March 17, and will hold their final scrimmage on Saturday, April 8. "It is going to be difficult to replace Coach Fela's combination of knowledge of football, coaching ability and work ethic," said Hodgin. "He has played an instrumental role in the rebuilding of our program and three straight winning seasons. It is very tough on staff when it loses a member that is not only an outstanding coach but a great person as well," he added. Fela came to WCU in 1990 from the University of Connecticut where he had helped the Huskies win a share of the Yankee Conference championship as offensive line coach. He has also served as an assistant at East Carolina (1987-88), The Citadel (1984-86), Colorado (1982), Rutgers (1981 & 1983), Pittsburgh (1980) and William Patterson (1979). He is a native of North Plainfield, NJ, and a graduate of Southwestern College of Kansas. He was voted by his peers as the Southern Conference's Offensive Assistant Coach of the Year following the 1992 season. WCU led the conference in offense in '93 and was ranked in the I-AA top 20 in scoring and offense in both '92 and '93. "This is a good opportunity for me and a professional move," said Fela. "I really enjoyed my five years at Western Carolina and I really hated to leave before we finished the job ... winning the Southern Conference championship." Info, courtesy of Sports Information.
