the Trail has been in existence for some years and permanently marked as far south as Greenwood Lake in New Jersey. From here, westerly across the state and southerly on the Kittatinny Ridge along the Delaware River to the Delaware Water Gap, the Trail is nearly finished with good prospects of its being completed soon. In Pennsylvania, trails built and maintained by local mountain clubs along the Blue Ridge are available nearly the whole distance to Harrisburg, but from there, southwesterly across Maryland to the Potomac River the route has not yet been definitely fixed, there being two routes available, one on each side of the Cumberland Valley. From Harper's Ferry on the Potomac southward, still along the Blue Ridge, about one hundred miles of new trail has recently been built by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club of Washington, nearly to the southerly end of the proposed Shenandoah National Park, where it reaches the Natural Bridge National Forest, and a continuous trail already exists in this forest, which will carry the Appalachian Trail as far as the Peaks of Otter in southern Virginia. From here to Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina near the northern boundary, a preliminary investigation of the route has been made, and an alternative route to the northerly end of the Unaka National Forest in Virginia is being considered. From this point southerly and southwesterly along the Blue Ridge, the Unakas, and the Great Smokies, along the boundary between North Carolina and Tennessee, available trails are already in existence except in some of the very roughest parts, nearly or quite to the Georgia line, a little beyond which, at Cohutta Mountain, one branch of the Trail will probably terminate, though it may be extended to Lookout Mountain in Tennessee, and another branch will terminate at Jasper or Mount Oglethorpe in Georgia, not far from Atlanta. The total length of the route above described is thirteen hundred miles, and completed trails, though disconnected in places as yet, already extend over more than one- half of this distance. Judging from the interest and enthusiasm the project excites among those along the route, it will not be many years before the Appalachian Trail will in reality extend "From Maine to Georgia." 56

In 1926, the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club began to print an annual handbook that outlined scheduled hikes for each month of the year, including winter. This 1931 handbook was collected by George Masa (1881-1933), a photographer active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor regularly-scheduled hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains.
