  • MARCH 9, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 7 Cats back on ball! Football team began spring drills Monday WCU's football Catamouts opened their 1978 spring drills Monday and head coach Bob Waters had a squad of about 75 players on hand. The Cats, who finished with a 6-4-1 record last season after winning their last five games, will return 38 lettermen and expect to have as many as 18 starters back for their season opener on Sept 2 at East Carolina. "Two of our primary objectives this spring will be to develop | solid plan for our running game, and bring the young group in our receiving corps along," said Waters. "We've got to establish what we can and cannot do without Darrell Lipford," Waters said, referring to WCU's tailback who was Southern Conference Player of the Year last season and rushed for 4.089 yards during his four-year career as a starter. "Our tailback has been the heart of our running game, but we'll have to take a good look now at our fullback-tailback relationship and see how we can attack most effectively, We'll also be counting on incoming freshmen among our running backs and that requires a certain amount of speculation." Waters said. Western also lost both starting wide receivers, split end Wayne Tolleson (who led the nation in receiving last season with 73 catches for 1,101 yards), and Catback Jeff CicCOne, one of the most underrated receivers in the league last season. "We have the talented players with some experience to fill the wide-out spots." said Waters, "but they are Games snowed out The weather has played havoc with Western Carolina's efforts to get its 1978 baseball season under way. Last weekend's games with Georgia Tech in Atlanta were cancelled due to ice and cold and it has now been announced that this Saturday's home opener against Carson-Newman College will have to either be moved or rescheduled. The Catamounts new baseball facility will not be ready for this Saturday's scheduled game with the Eagles. Melting snow has hampered work crews in their preparations of the field. No decision has been made yet concerning Monday's scheduled game at Western against Appalachian State. Western was scheduled to open its season Wednesday at Carson-Newman, but weather forecasts were not encouraging. "Our problem is our conversion to the semester system," said Haywood. "We are having to start earlier and finish our season earlier. Starting baseball earlier in the mountains means more weather problems, and we are having them." Defensively. Western loses only OM starter, a linebacker, and Waters expects the young unit to work mostly on basics this spring. "We will give the defense a chance to gain more football experience and we expert the competition to be verv keen there. Pot example, we have six potential starters who saw much plav ing time fighting for just three starting spots in the line." Waters explained. Ihe Cats will be working with three sophomore linebackers and concentrating on strengthening the two starting positions. WCU vvas hit extremely hard by injuries in that unit last season. Spring practice in the secondary is going to be very difficult for the Cats. Although the unit finished first in the Southern Conference and ranked eighth nationally. only one starter will even participate in spring drills on a part-time basis. Two of the starters are not in school this semester and must come to summer school to be eligible by fall; one- (Wilhe Carpenter) is the starting centertielder on the baseball team; and the fourth. Willie Wells, will be in spring drills only when he's not involved in track, w hen' hi's one of the top scorers. Western's offensive line should be the most sound unit on the field. There are seven seniors in that unit which led the Cats to an average of over 400 yards per game in total offense last season. The quarterback situation is also bright with Mike Pusev, Kent Briggs and Dee Walsh returning. Waters will send the Cats through 20 workouts, which began yesterday. Ihe Cats will break for Faster on March 23 aiul resume workouts April 3. The spring game is scheduled for April 13. "Overall, we want lo sustain our momentum from last year and maybe even add a little to it." said Waters. "The challenge will be even greater this season because vve won't surprise anyone the wav we did late last season. If vve have a good spring and continue lo improve the way vve did last season. 1 will have to admit that things look promising." • CW7 JOS SCHLITV BKI WISH I CO Mil WAIIKI t WIS THE DEAN OF BEER'S QUICKIE QUIZ.
