last year found it not an easy hike, but one which furnished plenty of climbing and beautiful scenery in the valley below as you wound your way up the slope. The mountain is 5000 feet above sea level, about two miles east of Line Springs and about forty-five miles from Knoxville. Drive to Wear's Valley; when you get within about one mile of Line Springs, turn to the left and drive to the Huse-Lawson home (where is said to be the largest chestnut tree in the world — about 27% feet in circumference). Leaving the old Lawson home, you go up an old road-bed for half a mile, and then the climbing proper begins. The trail is very steep and a little rough at first, but when you reach the top of the first ridge, it is much easier climbing. If you continue to climb, don't forget to stop long enough to get a view of the Chilhowee Range that can be seen from Sevierville to Tallassee Springs. From the top of Cove Mountain you get one of the best possible views of the Smoky Range, including Guyot, LeConte, Collins, Clingman's Dome, Siler's, Thunderhead, and Gregory's. More peaks can be seen from this point than from any other place in the mountains. There are several ways to descend the mountain, any one of which may be taken by those making the trip. Those who want to go up Saturday may spend the night at Line Springs by making reservations with Mrs. Belle Caton. Leave Saunders System at 8:00 A. M. on Sunday. Round-trip distance about nine miles. Bring food for one meal, and a canteen. Leaders: HUGH WEBB (3-7839) and MARJORIE SHIPE (6-1517). November 8 ROUND TOP Back in the isolated and lovely Wear's Cove is a pleasant old-fashioned resort known as Line Springs. It is built in the heart of the forest on the side of a mountain, and looking down upon it with an air °f benign protection are two wooded peaks — Cove Mountain and Round Top. For a short, rather steep, and 51

In 1926, the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club began to print an annual handbook that outlined scheduled hikes for each month of the year, including winter. This 1931 handbook was collected by George Masa (1881-1933), a photographer active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor regularly-scheduled hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains.
