  • 22 1ewsmagazine Rugby 4-0 in the season by Angela Weinkie Wenewsmagazine The perfect season! Yes, the WCU rugby team did it. They had an undefeated season with four wins. Also, they have been claimed conference champions. Rugby is more that just a sport to the guys on the team. It is a way of life. From the outside looking in you can never understand it. From the inside looking out you can never explain it. This quote sums up the rugby season in the teams eyes. After the UGA game the team did not slow down. We're riding a good wave right now, Randy Wood said. The team is without a coach for the rest of the season. Without Rex we have to lean on each other more, Wood said, We still have the same mind set and the same goals. The team had their heads on straight, playing against Elon WCU came out on to. In the second quarter, Justin Verway subbed in for one play. During his time in the game, he impressed everyone. Verwey scored a try. Along with his five points, Myles Hutton and Stanley Brigman also added tries to the score board. WCU won 17-0. During practice the following week, Alex Peillom was injured. Missing Alex will be detrimental, Wood said. He always produces quality minutes and very dependable on the field. Despite Alex, the game went on. UNCC canceled earlier in the season. This was their makeup game. The final score was 46-5. The game went quick. The first two tries were fast in the game. Mike Ebding and Stanley Brigman put WCU on the board. Zac Early, Robbie Lyvers, and Matt Carow added onto Ebding and Stanelys tries to dominate the game. Jason Lowman also kicked very well. Overall, it was an amazing performance, Pellom said from the sidelines. Lowmans kicks kept us in control of the game. The team also piayed with great field positions. This game brought the team closer to being conference champs. The following week Davidson forfeited and WCU took another victory and clenched the conference championship. The next game is against Duke. They're a tough team who breezed through their division, Pellom said about Duke. Duke is holding the same record as WCU 4-0. If we execute and play how we should, said Pellom, I! feel we should be in a good position at the end of the game. If WCU beats Duke they are on their way to the national championship. Along with making it to nationals, they will also be the first team to do that without a coach. Furman will be the next challenge. They have won nationals two years in a row. Western won the year before that. Western is strong and ready to show what they have and try their hand against the reigning champs. WCU Hockey team smokes competition - Ranked 24th nationwide Cats undefeated against W. Kentucky, S.C., Clemson, and N.C. State by Angela Weinkle Wenewsmagazine The WCU hockey team had an impressive showing at the Sports Complex in Raleigh. They walked away with an undefeated record, 3-0-1. | think that was the best this team has ever played, even though we were missing players, said Jeremy Pero. The hockey team put up a nice show against West Kentucky and walked away with a victory of 8-1. Rookie Mike Glass, put in three goals. Brandon Freeman also had three goals and an assist, Sten Taube added another one and so did Nathan Powell. Mike Giass, has certainly impressed me and the rest of the team, Pero said. He came out of the Western Kentucky game with three goals. The following game was just as remarkable. WCU showed South Carolina how to play hockey catamount style. They came out with another victory 7-5. Yet again, Glass showed his skills with three other goals and an assist. Against Clemson, Glass and Freeman pulled it together and had a power play. WCU and Clemson fought hard against each other, but they kept it close. The two teams tied with the score of 7-7. Justin Ahmed shot in two goals. Freeman and Glass also came through during the game and put points on the board, along with Gray Previtte. The Clemson game was certainly a highlight of the weekend, said Pero. That is the first time that we have not been beat by them. NC State was WCUs next victim. WCU came out on top, 5-3. Taube and Mike Venneri had one goal and one assist each. Previtte and Freeman also had goals. | think the dynamic of our team has certainly proven itself in the past couple of months, said Pero. Although we are a young team, we are surprising our competition with our amount of skill and team acquisition. Even without a place to practice, the WCU hockey team has put their name on the map. The team is holding rank at 24" and has a record of 7-9-1 in the league and an over all record of 10-9- 1. The players of this team have certainly proven to everyone this past weekend with our undefeated record that we mean business, Pero said. The team has never been nationally ranked and we are now in a great position for nationals. WCU jumped up eleven spots to 24th in the NCRA division 11 (National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association) www.nerha.org. The NCRA uses a combination of a weekly poll of regional league directors and a computerized ranking system. WCU Hockey is currently the only Western team ranked nationaly. Photo by Angela Weinkle
