  • western ■ • • arolinian L ALEX the • * movie by Alex Esmon Admittedly, the title doesn't just jump out and grab your attention when you're scanning the new releases at the video store. It's also easy to simply miss seeing it as it sits there collecting dust on the bottom row, near the back of the store. Besides, how many people actually make it to the "U" section of the new releases anyway? Most people do well to make it to the M's. (Can you withstand the magnetic pull of that masterpiece known as "Mimic"?) "Ulee's Gold" is a terrific slice of realism set against the backdrop of rural Florida. Ulee Jackson (played by Academy Award nominee Peter Fonda) is a quiet, solitary man who finds refuge in the soothing hum of the honey bee. His existence is a simple one: do whatever is necessary to get the honey produced and bottled on time. Ulee is also in charge of looking after his two granddaughters, Casey and Penny. Their father, Jimmy, is presently serving time for a robbery, and their mother, Helen, is in Orlando going from job to job, in a perpetual state of altered perception. Ulee has to be both father and mother for the two girls, and the task is almost too much for this weary beekeeper. Ulee's own loneliness is intensified by the death of his own wife years earlier, an event which he says "pretty much made me fall off the earth." The trouble starts when Helen is found passed out in a bar by a couple of Jimmy's old running mates, Ferris and Eddie. Ulee is forced to go to Orlando and bring Helen home, although he can't stand her or the two men who are "helping" her. Upon arrival, Ulee finds Helen in a state of oblivion, passed out cold from an overdose of uppers. It's at this juncture that you find out the real motive behind the hooligans keeping Helen: in her stupor, Helen told the two thugs about $ 100,000 hidden somewhere by Jimmy before he went to the slammer. Ferris and Eddie blackmail Ulee into getting them the money, threatening harm to Helen and the grandchildren if he doesn't deliver. The story of "Ulee's Gold" is original and it moves at a nice pace. The feel of the movie is like that of the surroundings: quiet, subdued, rural and 100 percent real. This film is very reminiscent of "Tender Mercies" in its portrayal of the true American experience. The acting in this film is perfectly understated. While your watching this movie, you'll forget that it's a movie at all. It's sort of like your watching a documentary on your neighbor. The most amazing and pleasing thing to watch in "Ulee's Gold" is the change undergone by Ulee and his whole family as a result of their having to muddle through the mess together. Ulee steps right into the role of anti-hero. He doesn't want to save the day or be noticed for his amazing attributes. Ulee Ulee s Gold *> * features April 8,1998 Bringing #\ just wants to see his granddaughters grow up right, and he wants to process his Tupelo Honey. He's an unassuming man who becomes a hero everyone can sympathize with. To say that Ulee is a simple man would be a mistake, but it would also be a mistake to over-analyze his solitude. As Ulee himself states, "I'm just realizing that I don't know enough about nothing to say anything." People who grew up in small town America will really enjoy "Ulee's Gold" simply because it is so "small town." The sounds, the music, the mood, the people—all these things combine to give a portrait of Anywhere, USA. Do you think Will Smith or John Travolta would be caught dead walking out of the local IGA with milk and bread? "Ulee's Gold" is a movie which deserves to be seen and not overlooked just because you're too lazy to walk all the way to the "U" section. Real heroes are the men and women who hold their families together from day to day with relentless work and a large amount of love. Ulysses Jackson is one of those people. service to you. "Ulee's Gold" is rated R for strong language and mild violence. "Ulee's Gold" should be available at all the video stores in and around Cullowhee and Sylva.
