LMP Seeks Response on Concert Issue LMP - One of the big questions on campus this fall is, "Is LMP going to sponsor any more major concerts?" Well, the answer is ... we don't know yet. There are several factors to be considered. One thing to consider Is howwetlthe .38 Special/Bon Jovi concert went over last September. Another factor that must be looked into is the possibility of using the money allocated for concerts for something else like student trips, special activities, small concerts, movies, etc. Finally, the biggest consideration is YOU... Do the students here at Western Carolina want another major concert in Cullowhee? Let's take this one step at a time. Just how well did the .38 Special and Bon Jovi concert do? Keeping in mind that it was Ihe first big concert in the new Regional ActMty Center, it did OK. The production crew ran smoothly. Itwas a great place to have a concert. And, over 4000 tickets ended up being sold. However, it could have been better. That is, only 1400 out of the 5000-plus students on this campus went to the concert. The rest were people in the region. Since Last Minute Productions' function is to provide entertainment and activities for the students, this last fact cannot be taken lightly. LMP simply cannot justify spending large amounts of money on concerts with this kind of support from the students. What alternatives are there over having major concerts? There are lots of other ways to use that money. One possibility is having several smaller scale concerts instead. This way, we could have a variety of groups come to Cullowhee. Hopefully we could appeal to the many different interests here on this campus. However, these groups would not be your "big-name" bands such as the Beach Boys, Cyndi Lauper and Journey. They would be bands on a smaller scale such as the Romantics, Producers and the Scomers. Another alternative is to fake the money allocated to concerts and divide it up between other areas of Last Minute Productions. This would allow more money for things like leisure actMties, outdoor activities, movies and special events. So, do you still want a major concert? Before you answer, there are several things about the concert business you should know. Concerts are an expensive business. Most students don't realize how much It costs to put on a major production. Bands such as Lionel Richie, Springsteen, ZZ Top, Journey, Huey Lewis and Phil Collins all cost in the $75,000-$125,000 range. This price Includes opening act, sound and lights, and production costs. For WCU to be able to afford concerts like this, it would have to be a sellout crowd and tickets would cost at least $15.00 to $20.00 just to break even. When bands decide to go on tour, almost every college, civic center and concert hall makes bids to these groups to get them to come to their town. Naturally, the bands are going to go where the money is. They want to go where they can make a profit. As much as people don't like to believe this, bands ate in the business of making money, not music. Think about it; if you gross $200,000-ptus In Greensboro or Charlotte, why come to Cullowhee? Many students complain that they want to get bands on the weekends and not during the week. It is very difficult to book bands on weekends; besides, It usually makes the tickets cost more. Even if we were lucky enough to find a group on tour in our area and if we had enough money to afford them and, if we thought students would support it, and, if we found[a date suitable for both the band and us and, if the facility is available and, if the band Is willing to take a chance on making money, that still doesn't mean we can get a group because Cullowhee is not exactly in the mainstream of the concert world. Are you ready to cast your vote yet? Remember, there are other alternatives to major concerts. And LMP does use student's money to produce concerts. Finally, we cannot be too picky. (Beggars can't be choosers!) The key to this whole thing is that we need more student support. Maybe the question isn't "Do you want LMP to sponsor another major concert?" We should rephrase the question to "Are you willing to support another major concert this year?" To help LMP determine whether or not we should sponsor anymore major concerts, please take the time to fill out the adjoining questionnaire. You can drop it by the LMP office on the second floor of the UC or in the boxes in both Brown and Dodson cafeterias. Thank you for your cooperation! Last Minute Productions specify why you did not wish to go to any concerts.
