  • Westerns yearbook poses a return by Margaret Hester * WCnewsmagazine A whole years worth of events packed into one place? Too good to be true, right? Well not anymore now that Westerns yearbook is back! In 2001-2002, Westerns yearbook died due to no interest. After three years of being non-existent, Western's yearbook has been reborn this year thanks to Lauren Riggan, Editor-in-Chief, BJ Pendry, Chief of Staff, and Jennifer Belyeu, Layout Editor, and it will be out in September 2005. Earlier this year, Pendry decided to join forces with Riggan to try to resurrect the yearbook. Your college experience is something worth remembering, said Riggan, who was editor of her yearbook in high school. [] saw this as] an opportunity to represent the university, students, faculty and everyone involved, said Pendry. Here at WCU, there is a Student Media Board. This media board helps in the funding of projects, which are media related, such as this newspaper. However, the yearbook is not a part of this media board. WCUs yearbook is self-supported. This is thanks to the publishing company that they have chosen: Taylor Publishing. With Taylor Publishing, a computer and a digital camera are provided for the staff. Also, unlike most companies, Taylor Publishing only prints the amount of books that are ordered; which saves money and makes things easier. Black 8:00pm - 10:00pm Admission: $4 for students $6 for non-students for thelr favorite Idol I! AAT Getting a hold of one of these new yearbooks is also made easier because of Taylor Publishing. The yearbooks are marketed directly to the parents of students at WCU through the mail. So be on the lookout for information regarding getting your own yearbook. Not only are there many memories wrapped into one place, there are also a few surprises to be seen with this new yearbook. Of course, the theme is always a great surprise. However, one unique thing about WCUs yearbook is that it is in full color. Becoming involved with the yearbook is the best way to ensure all things that youd like to remember will be in the yearbook. Yearbook staff members are needed, and no experience is necessary, just an interest. If interested, please contact BJ Pendry at bjpendry@charter.net. Also, clubs, organizations and intramural teams that are interested in being covered in the yearbook should contact Lauren Riggan at Cullowhee has its own Idol WCnewsmagazine 7 laurenriggan@hotmail.com. Remember, the year and all of its events can be a hassle, but now that Western has its yearbook back, it will revive memories. [We hope that this yearbook will be] a true representation of Western, said Belyeu. aeons Theatre Ensemble Presents Performances March 11th & April 1st WCU University Center Grandroom Each audience member will get to vote by Kelli E. McNair * WCnewsmagazine Brought to WCU by the Black Theatre Ensemble, Cullowhee Idol first premiered on campus Feb. 4 in the University Center Grandroom with 50 participants and 18 finalists. A spin-off of FOXs reality television series, the event includes a chance for WCU students to show their talent and compete for a $300 prize. Sheena Aaron, Chief of Staff for BTE, said, There are a lot of promising individuals. The judges of Cullowhee Idol each had their own aspect to view and decide if the contestant was good enough to go on to the next round. The judges were Aaron for appearance, Chris Hamilton of BGLAD for vocals and Lucas Harris for overall performance. Due to advertising in Asheville, Cullowhee Idol was able to make an impromptu opening to the public for viewing on opening night. The first round of the contest is due to air on Channel 62, featuring finalists and some who did not make it. The next competition will be held on the second floor of the UC on March 11. It is free to the public. The judges will also be cutting people in that round. The final competition will be featured during Spring Fling in April (date to be announced). It will feature the top five contestants and end with one winner for the monetary prize. Aaron said there will be online voting of the participants; however, there is not a web address to announce just yet, so look for flyers. Aaron encouraged, Please come see the best and the worst of what Cullowhee has to offer. scene
