Rugby Report Copier Glitch Creates Super-Cards JOSH GIBBS STAFF WRITER WCU students found ways to save money at the expenses of the company that operates copiers in Hunter Library and other campus buildings, according to the head librarian and a company representative. Taking advantage of a software problem in the copiers' coin boxes and card readers, an unknown number of students raised card balances to $500 or more. Although Bill Kirwan, University Librarian, said the company, Capital Copy, Inc., fixed the glitch, there are reports of continued use of the inflated cards. "This is between the student and Capital, not the student and the school," said Kirwan. He also said that WCU has not lost any money because the library only provides the space for the copiers. The money for paper and maintenance comes from Capital Copy, Inc. Western concluded an agreement for the copier service with Capital Copy in February 1996, Kirwan said. Student sources told the Carolinian that balances could be raised several ways. One technique involved spending a little money while making large increases in balances. A second approach was to increase balances without spending any money. Still another approach transferred or copied the large balance on one card to another card. The only card that could be used in this way was the Capital Copy Card. The new CAT Card did not work in the same way because of a three- strip system, one of which is specifically for copying. The initialization process aid not allow value to be added to the vending machine or food service stripes. When library staff became aware of the problem, an employee of Capitol Copy was notified and tried to fix the problem. Initially it was found that changes did not work, and new components were ordered. Kirwan said he didn't know how long the copier troubles had persisted or the extent of money lost. According to Capital Copy representative Dale Prichett, WCU is the only campus they serve which has had such a problem. "What we had was a software problem in the coin boxes and card readers," Prichett said. "The manufacturer provided us with new software to correct the problem." Although there are still many cards with increased balances on campus, currently there is no contingency to deal with the owners of the cards. "People know what is right and what is wrong," said Kirwan. "People who have the cards know who they are, and they know they didn't pay" Kirwan and Capital Copy have scheduled a meeting for Feb. 19 to determine what the next step will be. PHOTO TERRY K. ROBERTS/WC "Hello, how much money would you like today?" Pom-Pom Squad Shows Spirit SETH R. SAMS STAFF WRITER "It just gives me a natural high," said Kelly Owens, a member of WCU's pompom and dance team. Owens is one of sixteen women on the dual team, which performs during half- time at home basketball games as the dance team; throughout the game, however, they pick up their pompoms and support the Cats across court from the cheerleaders. The WCU dance team is now in its second year, and seven of the sixteen women are charter members. The pom-pom squad is brand- new this year. "I'm real proud of the way we've come together as a team," said dance team student leader Molly Prentice. "And we're proud to be the first pom squad at WCU." Many team members have been dancing for years. Donna Buckner, the team's advisor, commented, "They're all exceptional dancers." Chancellor John Bardo explained the team's origins. "The pom squad evolved from a request by several students for the university to consider such a program," he said. "They [pom squads] have become a significant part of the university athletic scene across the country. "Pom squads generally add to the spirit of the games, as Western's has already," Bardo added. "Everyone has really supported us and backed us up one hundred percent," said Buckner, "including Dr. Bonita Jacobs and Chancellor Bardo." PHOTO TERRY K. Western Searches For New Vice Chancellor of Student Development JAMES CARTER STAFF WRITER Western Carolina University is searching for a new Vice Chancellor of Student Development. The search committee, chaired by Dr. Gayle Miller, held a meeting and public forum in the Hospitality Room of the Ramsey Center on Feb. 4 to allow students and faculty to offer opinions on possible candidates. "Student input is critically important," Miller said. Only two students attended the event. "The new chancellor must blend all campus organizations together to increase campus communication," said Brian Allen, who represented both RSA and SGA. "Students need to know what this position means to them," he said. Allen also called for "an awareness of what Student Development is," and pointed out a need for more student leadership training. "Many student leaders experience burnout," said < Allen. "The new Vice Chancellor needs to be able to see what they want with it." According to Miller, "The charge is to find the very best possible person for this critically important position. General requirements include an appropriate Ph.D. and a minimum of ten years experience [involving] student affairs." Miller said that after the committee has narrowed the pool of applicants to fifteen, a meeting will be held with the chancellor to continue the process. During the meeting, Housing Director Randy Rice made a call for new housing and said the "new vice chan- cellor for student development has to represent the student population." Rice also suggested that "publications, marketing, and other materials" candidates have produced should be used to help show the capabilities of the applicants. Other members of the panel believed that the new vice chancellor "must get out there and be active on campus" and that there needs to be "a different way of doing business." "You must not be able to shut him up by throwing money at him," said another participant. In a concluding comment, Miller noted, "The new vice chancellor must be a student advocate, be pro-active, diverse, experienced, an advocate of change and understanding to to student needs." Another open forum is planned for 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, in Reynolds lobby. Miller encouraged students and faculty to attend. "Students are why we are here," said Miller. "Everything the new vice chancellor will do will overlap into school issues. "The search will go on until the best possible person is found," said Miller. PHOTO SETH R.
