For five years we have explored, revisited, and made our own the half of the Smokies nearest us, and now we are faced with new worlds to conquer. No more lovely region than the Hughes Ridge could be chosen for our club's introduction to this vast area. There are peaks towering as high and views equalling in grandeur any of those to be found on the state-line. Mountain masses on every side sweep into undulating blue-gray horizons. The green of the woods might be monotonous but for the contrasting spots of cultivated patches in occasional coves. Hughes Ridge itself is comparable to the southwestern or Gregory's Bald end of the park area in its general features. The crest is smoothly rounded with many large oak and chestnut trees and comparatively little undergrowth. Here the hiker may breathe freely, remove his attention from the tiresome trail, and absorb the undiluted atmosphere of this wild, strange place. There may be a better route developed before the date of this hike, but unless there is, it will be necessary to leave Saunders System by 6:00 o'clock Saturday morning, July 25. July 26 GREENBRIAR PINNACLE The Grecnbriar hike is not too long and hard for the beginner, nor is it so easy that experienced climbers scorn it. From the side of the mountain, going UP the Catstairs, one can see the increasingly beautiful distances of the valley west of LeConte. No trees or impending ridges stop the view at any time, and from several points Brushy and LeConte and Chilhowee may be seen to superb advantage. The start is at Green- briar Hotel; the three miles to the rocky top may be covered in less than two hours of pleasant climbing over a well-defined trail. The wild flowers, particularly the wild orchids and flaming azaleas, grow richly on 39
