Jordan's 116 Points In Week Goes For New State Record (Greensboro Daily News) Two years ago Jim Jordan was Betting an all-time scoring record for Nonth Carolina schoolboys, and one fine Saturday night in March he was carried off the floor as leader of Welcome High School's state Class A basketball cham pions. It was a good catch for Coach Jim Gudger, too, when Jim Jordan enrolled at Western Carolina College. His freshman year was not particularly outstanding, but he was a steady performer for the Catamounts. His sophomore season began on an improved note and through the first 17 games Jim Jordan had Elon (61) FG FT PF TP -. f 1 1 3 3 2 1 4 5 Gauldin, f 0 2 1 2 5 3 0 13 1 0 1 2 Maddox. c 4 14 2 22 Stone, c 0 0 3 0 King, c 0 0 1 0 Whitley, g 1 1 4 3 Timmons, g 2 3 3 7 Packard, g 0 2 2 2 Mclntyre, g 1 0 4 2 Totals 17 27 33 61 WCC (87) FG FT PF TP Ray, f 3 2 5 8 Pulliam, f 0 1 1 1 Koberts, f 0 0 0 0 Shamel. f 3 7 4 13 Williams, f 0 3 1 3 Jordan, c 12 5 5 29 Shields, c 0 0 0 0 Martin, g 3 6 3 12 Swartzel, g 0 0 1 0 Migaiolo, g 0 7 2 7 CULLOWHEE GULF AND SERVICE J. CATAMOUNTS RIP HIGH POINT 75-65 FEB. 8—After three quarters of neck and neck play the Cats put on the steam in the final quarter to come out on top with a score of 75-65, in a North State Conference bout with the High Point Panthers tonight. High Point got the opening jump and the first bucket. From there the first half was filled with ties and lead changes. The second quarter the lead changed hands scored 298 points, an average ol 17.6 Which ranked him high in the North State Conference. But Jim Jordan had himself a real week during the week just passed. He scored 116 points in four games, which is the most ever scored in a calendar week by any North Carolina collegiate player, according to Daily News records. He led his Catamounts from a three—and a potential on moving into second place. Jim Jordan is thus Daily News Athlete of the Week, No. 385 in the series. The Davidson County athlete has always played center, and coaches wonder how he does it since he stands only 6-foot-5 and has to give height to many of his opponents. Coach Gudger, too, has given in to the idea of moving Jim to forward from time to time, but Jordan is his center now. His feat of 45 field goals during the week, many of them on tap-ins against taller opponents, justifies Coach Gudger's decision to leave status quo. WHOOPS! HIT A BUMP! Harmon Simpson takes a header into the mat at the hands of Keith Res-is during a recenit basketball half-time demonstration of Jiu-Jitsu. Students at W.C.C. observed a very fast paced demonstration of Jiu-Jitsu at the recent W.C.C.- Catawba game. Action was bo fast on the mat that this reporter didn't exactly "observe" as was mentioned above, but I will say that those guys were on the mat so many times, that from where I sat it looked as if they weren't up long enough to get a good breath of air before, Wham! Down one of them went again. I have talked to both since, and I can report that neither seems to be the worse for wear. I asked them where they picked up this interesting sport, and Keith Sevis, a black belt in Kodukan Judo, told me the following concerning Judo's background and tactics: WALKERS' CLEANERS Cleaning — Dyeing — Alterations Agents: Ray Buchanan Phi Alexander "Sunset" Overcash Joretta Walker ♦ ♦»»♦»♦»♦♦♦♦♦♦♦ ♦♦ Western Carolina's 6-4 record itied the team with Elon and was barely ahead of Atlantic Christian's 6-5 when the week began. It was a real fight for a coveted tournament berth On Monday the Cats beat High Point 75-65, surprisingly close, but Jordan was high man with 22 points to insure the victory. On Tuesday they beat Catawba 88-63, and Jordan only played three quarters. By that time he had 31 points. On Wednesday they beat Catawba again but this time the Cats trailed by two points at halftime. It was the third quarter comeback sparked by Jordan which turned the 73-61 victory, and Jordan was again high with 25 points. On Saturday they beat Guilford, and the Quakers had just dropped Elon and Lenoir-Rhyne during the week. The Catamounts trailed by four points at halftime and Jordan's tip-ins and hooks in the third quarter enabled the Cats to win 93-83 . . . and Jordan had his best collegiate performance, 38 points. Western Carolina moved its record to 10-4 in the conference, leaving Elon and ACC . . . and now pushing Lenoir-Rhyne's 11-3. Jordan was back to his old Welcome tricks. eight times and the score was tied five times. The Cats managed to have a five point lead at the half. In the third quarter, the score was tied twice and the lead changed hands five times. The fourth quarter the Cats grabbed a 10-point lead and kept it the remainder of tbe ball game. Jim Jordan, with his hook shot, turned in 22 points to lead the Cats, while Kent Mosely used his set shots to pour in 26 points for the losers. 'Herman Shamel with 16, Tommy Williams with 10, and Bob Ray with 14 helped the Cats to take the victory. The Jayvees lost a 58-57 thriller (Continued on page 4) "Judo, as it is known today. was developed from the old concepts of Jiu-Jitsu by Pro Jigoro Kano in 1882. The K kan Judo Institute was formed in Tokyo, Japan, and the teachings of Professor Kano were placed belie world. The first class had nine students. Today there are many thousands of Judoists the world over. People today have heard the word Judo, and are very much under the impression that it is nothing more than the very "Dirtiest of fighting tactics gathered and taught in the quickest manner possible." This is not true for I have spent ten years of my life in the study of Judo, and I have never found Judo taught quickly <jr otherwise. Judo is primarily based on six basic principles: Balance, Momentum, Leverage, The Fulcrum, Pressure, and Resistance. It is mastered by the individual thru training one's self in all phases of control and applications of one's energy, both physical and mental. Judo is not just a means of self- defense, but is also one of the finest means of maintaining an excellent standard of physical conditioning. The possibility of injury is always present, but in ten years I have seen only one injury; a broken collar-bone, caused by the individual's own carelessness. Every effort is made in early training periods to show proper ways of Above, the Maradas play the Blue Dolphins. falling, attacking, and resisting. Each phase is carefully explained and worked upon until the student is completely ready for advanced study in Judo techniques. Then, and only then, is he allowed to try complex arts." From a reporter's standpoint n book could be written on Judo, but space . . . Well! If any person reading this article is interested in a further discussion; please contact Keith Revis here on the campus. He may be able to arrange some classes for you.
