  • t. - 16 GET A LIFE March 22, 2000 BTE to present '3 x 6' by Al Wiggins Professor of Communication and Theatre Arts '3 x 6' is a collection of three plays, each occurring at different times or seasons in the life of the pivotal character, Jake. In "Momma Lean," the first movement, Jake, a cabaret singer in his early 20s, finds himself in a rather strange and ludicrous situation in Momma Lean's, an after-hours joint in the Midwest. In the second piece, "Out Here in the Jungle," Jake, now a merchant seaman in his 30s and using an as- ^* sumed name, visits a friend and meets Niki, a young professional woman on the way 3x6 WHEN: Thursday, March 23 Friday, March 24 Saturday, March 25 WHERE: Hoey Auditorium PRICE: Students - $3.00 Senior Citizens - $7.00 General Admission - $10.00 as it seems. In the final piece, "Jake's Park," Jake is in his 70s, just another old man wandering through a prodigious collection of unfulfilled dreams, misspent aspirations, and unkept promises. Through Jake's eyes we also see the young Jake, the tireless dreamer and hopeless romantic. And at the end of '3 x 6,' it isn't cynicism we see - it's hope. Presented by the Black Theatre Ensemble and Diamond Jake & Company, the production '3 x 6' features Bobbi Baker, ^ Kolnecca Home, Venus Miller, Joseph Monroe II, Aby Pagan, and Al Wiggins. Supervising producer is 7:30pm 7:30pm 2:30pm up who seems to have it all. But, all is not Dale Brady-Wilson. Renowned Art Professor and Critic to Speak at WCU by Holly Rhodarmer Asst. Features Editor One of the best ways to diversify an education is to expand it beyond the limits of the classroom. When opportunities arise on campus that introduce an extra dimension to the college experience, it is important to take advantage of these situations. Such an opportunity has taken the form of S. Lane Faison, Jr. Faison, who is scheduled to deliver three lectures, is a well of knowledge and experience. The 92-year old professor emeritus of art at Williams College in Massachusetts, which is relatively isolated in its location, but its reputation has elevated it to the likes of Harvard and Yale. Faison served in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II. He also worked for the Office of Strategic Services, specifically for the art looting investigation unit. His official report on Hitler's collection, gained by interrogating Nazi art personnel in Austria and Germany, aided in returning the art to its rightful owners. His achievements earned him the French Legion of Honor in 1947. He returned to Munich in 1950, as director of the U.S. Department of State's collection point to oversee the return of art stolen by the Nazis in occupied countries. Faison is also celebrated for his ability as a professor. He graduated from Williams College in 1929, earned his Masters degree from Harvard in 1930, and master of fine arts degree in art history from Princeton in 1932. He worked as an assistant professor of art at Yale from 1932-36 before embark ing on a 40-year career on the art department falculty at his alma mater, Williams. He has been published in The New York Times and Saturday Review. He was art critic for The Nation from 1950-53. Hailed by the New York Times as the professor with the ability to transform "a band of would-be doctors and bank presidents into art history majors," he has made a sizable impact on the art world. His students are a living testimony to his teaching abilities. The directors of the National gallery of Art in Washington, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago were all former students, as well as our own professor of art history, James Thompson. Faison's enthusiasm for art has infected generations. He teaches training the eye, stressing learning to see and the importance of pure observance. Williams has the advantage of a museum, where students can learn from original works, which is a far superior to reproductions. His teaching methods often incorporated comparing art to other elements in culture. While at Western, Faison will give three lectures. On March 22, he will discuss Hitler and Goering as art collectors. He will lead an informal discussion of his teaching methods on March 29. He will describe his activities as a critic in a small town far away from major art centers on April 5. All programs will begin at 7:30pm in Room 104 of Belk building. In addition he will conduct a sequence of informal presentations titled "Learning to Look." For more information, contact the WCU art department at 227-7210.
