  • inian #2 Eagles Slip by Inspired Catamounts, 28-21 by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor If Saturday night's game is any implication to the potential of the Western Carolina University Catamounts, then the sky's the limit for the Cats. Western (2-3, 2-2 in conference) dropped a tough game to the number two team in NCAA Division I-AA football, Georgia Southern, 28-21 in front of a large Parent's Day crowd in E. J. Whitmire Stadium. WCU Head Coach Bill Bleil was pleased with his team, but was disappointed that they couldn't pull off the win. "Our kids thought they were going to whip 'em; they thought that since last Sunday night. I couldn't have been prouder of the team; they played great," commented Bleil. "They kept themselves in a position to win the game. The defense played well again and offensively, we made great strides." Georgia Southern (6-0, 4-0 in SoCon) went on top for good with a minute, 23 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. On a third down with three yards to go, Eagle quarterback Greg Hill broke through tackles and scampered 15 yards for the touchdown. That score capped off a dominating 16 play, 80-yard drive that ate up 7:37 in the closing stages of the ball game. "They were a good team," explained Bleil. "Good teams can drive when they need to." Western was led in rushing once again by junior Brad Hoover. On only 18 carries, the 6'-2", 220 tailback tallied 101-yards against the GSU defense. It was his third 100-plus rushing game of the season. Walter Gary had the second highest total with 18- yards. After going 2-of-5, with two interceptions last week against Furman, sophomore Justin Cella played much better against the Eagles. Cella completed 10-of-14 passes for 69-yards and no interceptions. "Cella has come a long way in a few weeks," commented Bleil. Late in the game, the Catamounts had a last chance. Following the GSU score, the Cats got the ball on their own 30-yard line thanks to a 25-yard return by Tracy Biggs. However, on the first play, Justin Cella's pass was completed to senior Mardell Miller, who was hit by the Eagles Larry Rogers, was fumbled and the Eagles recovered. Following the game, Miller was extremely emotional. "The fumble broke my heart," stated Miller. "I really don't know what to say—I just wish I could have it back." Early in the ball game, things weren't looking too good for the Cats. Georgia Southern scored on their first two possessions. The two drives went for five an'd eight plays respectively, and ate up almost seven minutes off the clock. With a little under six minutes left in the first quarter, WCU found itself in a 14-0 hole. Yet, the Catamounts fought back, adding two unanswered second quarter scores of their own. Georgia Southern head coach, Paul Johnson seemed impressed by the play of the scrappy Cats. "Western did a great job. Give [Coach Bill] Bleil credit; his guys were ready to play," said Johnson. "They made us look worse than I think we are." Johnson, who is a 1979 graduate of WCU, went on to say, "As the game went on, they [WCU] did a good job adjusting. They really pounded our butt in the kicking game." Western Carolina next travels to Spartanburg, SC to tackle the Wofford Terriers. WCU should be hungry for a win, losing two-straight, and should be looking to avenge the loss suffered in Cullowhee last year on Homecoming. The game will be broadcast in Cullowhee on WWCU 90.5 FM.
