  • PAGE FOUR THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN April 10, 1948 Hessler Photo YOUNG MEN, YOUNG IDEAS—Roy G. Baker, Sherman, Texas, national president of the Young Democratic Clubs of America, welcomes his new headquarter!*, staff at YD offices in Ring Building, Washington, D.C. From left: Vincent M. Gaughan, 27, new executive director; Charles B. Markham. 21, director of publicity and research, and Baker 33. Trio are conducting an energetic membership and register a*id vote drive among young peorle :>f Americ^. CHOIR WILL GIVE CONCERT SUN. EVENING AT MURPHY The Cullowhee choir, composed of 50 mixed voices from the Cullowhee Baptist church and Western Carolina Teachers college, will appear in a concert of sacred music in the First Baptist church, at Murphy, Sunday evening, April 11, Dr. H. P. Smith, choir director, annuonced Monday. The choir has a concert engagement pending for April 25, and is to present its home concert in the "Cullowhee Baptist church Sunday, May 2, at 8:00 p. m. The choir's last concert, giyen Sunday evening in the Pendleton Street Baptist church, Greenville, S. C, was In The Spotlight He smokes Luckies, can't spell, fools around with a camera, pets projectors, makes love to a mike, drums a drum and drawls in dramatics. We are speaking of Frank Murray—the man most likely to do anything you want him to. Looks insignificant, doesn't he? Come to think about it, he isn't president of anything. But just ask him to spell "intramural." Better still, ask him when the radio station goes on the air. Ten to one he wrings your neck. Does Frank deserve the spotlight? Does a cow have a tail? He came to Cully in '44. Must have been a war on then, because he didn't stay long. After a stretch as a sailor (ask him about those inland stations), the native returned, and he's still with us. His major? Business administration and he agrees with you that accounting is accounting for the pre-mature gray. But he doesn't let his books interfere with his education, so he spreads his talents over quite a few clubs and makes them multiply. Get him cornered sometime for his version of "Chloe." Frank's real pet is journalism, and he intends to do some serious work along that line—as soon as he learns to spell. Right now he's concentrating on the Western Carolina Catamounts of the Air. Have fun, Frank! CAMP PLANS TO WRITE ARTICLE FOR TEACHING Miss Cordelia Camp, director of the Training school at Western Carolina Teachers college, has been asked by the editors of American Heritage, a magazine published in New York, to write an article on the teaching of local and state history. Miss Camp's story is scheduled for publication in April. Cartner, of Mocksville, took place February 27 in the Waynesville Presbyterian church at 4:30 p. m. The bride, who was given in marriage by her brother, W. L. Corbin of Dunn, wore a gown of spiderweb lace over net with a satin underskirt. She carried a white satin Bible, to which was attached an orchid showered with satin ribbons and lilies of the valley. The bride had one attendant, Miss Luetta Fisher of Greensboro, a former college mate. Mr. Cartner had as his best man James E. Davis of Asheville. Mrs. Cartner, a graduate of Woman's college, is a former student of Western Carolina. She was enrolled here two years as a major in home economics. She has been employed in Waynesville as assistant county home agent. well received by an over-flow audience. Miss Edyth Walker, a critic teacher in the Demonstration school at W. C. T. C, and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Finlay, Greenville, gave a reception for the choir in their home Sunday afternoon. The reception rooms were decorated with an assortment of white roses, carnations, and snapdragons. The dining room table was covered with an imported lace cloth. The center-piece consisted of carnations and snapdragons, with burning tapers on each side. A green-and-white color scheme, in honor- of St. Patrick's day, was carried out in the refreshments, which consisted of block ice cream, cake, nuts, and coffee, with a favor on each plate. Special guests at the reception were Dr. and Mrs. J. Dean Crain, the pastor and his wife; Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Williams, choir director and his wife, all of Greenville, and the Misses Lila Welch and Ether Cromer, Greer, S. C.
