  • Page 4 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Tuesday, April 22,1969 Western Carolina Trackmen Win Davidson Relays By WAT HOPKINS Sports Editor Western Carolina's Catamounts won the Davidson Relays by one-half point Saturday In a finish that makes track the exciting sport it is. The meet was resting on toe shoulders of Tommy Jordan who pulled throupli despite the pressure and the rain. All events were finished except the pole vault, and all jumping in that event was completed, except Jordan's final try at 16 feet six inches. Knowing the jump would win ;the event for him as well as Sthe meet, Jordan cleared toe jump, and was mobbed by his team-mates. "I told him (Tommy) his vault would mean the meet," said Coach Heath Whittle of Western. ' 'I wouldn't do this with anybody, but he's a tough competitor, and I knew I could depend on him. "And Tommy cleared toe bar, wrapping It up for us." The results of toe Davidson Relays this year were quite different from what they were last year when toe Cats placed last with a single point The reason for Western's success this year was depth in the team, according to Coach Whittle. Out of 14 events the Cats entered 13 and placed in nine of them. "There was plenty of good competition at Davidson," said Coach Whittle. "Pembroke was • pretty strong. They subsidize , in track. "Cumberland from Kentucky . had a couple of good milers, that ran the mile in 4:16 and 4:17; Davidson had some good sprint men; and, West Georgia was there with some good individuals. "What it boiled down to was the fact that there were a lot of good individuals from different schools. Everybody was taking points from everybody else. "We won it by our depth," Whittle continued. "We had enough good runners to enter every event but one, and I didn't think we had much of a chance of winning that event," Coach Whittle pointed out that the scoring was a lot "tighter" this year. Last year seven points separated toe first and second teams, where as the difference was only one-half a r' ~ ' point this year. Western got the afternoon at Davidson off to a good start, even though it began to rain early and continued fairly strongly. The Cats placed second in the first two relays. John McGowan, Steve Koob, Carson Elder and Roger Jones ran toe shuttle hurdle relay, second to only Davidson. Coach Whittle expected to win the next relay, the distance medley, "If Ned (Jones) had run his usual race, we might have taken it," he said. "The rain slowed him, though, and we took second." Western also placed second in toe two-mile relay. Mike Davis, Terry Helms, Tom Gibbons and Jones each ran 880 yards for the Cats. The Catamounts took third place In the Sprint Medley and fourth in the 440-yard relay and 880-yard relay, to finish out toe relays. Mike Metcalf set a school record and won second place in toe discus throw, with a toss of 140 feet. Jordan was second in the high jump and David Stepp tied for fifth, to pick up toe half-point that gave Western the meet. Then, knowing his vault would mean toe difference between third and first place, Jordan sucked in his breath and cleared Tommy Jordan, Western's photo above. He is ready to 16 feet, six inches, as more nervous members of Western's team had heart failures.
