  • PAGE 4 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THURSDAY, JANUARY 15, 1976 N.C. glass exhibit: a satisfying experience in the visual senses Floral vase by Cullowhee glassblower David Nichols is one of many hand-blown pieces on exhibit in Belk Art Gallery. Eight other North Carolina glassblowers are represented in the show, which runs through January 30. by mary yakush North Carolina Glass '76, which opened in Belk Art Gallery on Sunday, was something more than another fine exhibit. It was a celebration of the brilliant, sensuous material that is glass. Students, professors, administrators, and area residents commingled with the exhibiting glass artists, while Chancellor and Mrs. Robinson provided an elegant reception in the lobby. Harvey K. Littleton of the University of Wisconsin presented over $1600 worth of purchase awards, and then dispelled some of the mysteries of glassblowing with an excellent slide presentation and lecture. Littleton, regarded by young glass artists as their mentor, is a key figure in the revival of glass- blowing as a 20th century art form. He is an innovator, artist, aesthetician, teacher, and author whose intensely high energy level truly captivated his audience. Internationally recognized, Littleton instituted the first glass- blowing course offered in an american university system at the University of Wisconsin in 1962, which had among its members Professor Joan Byrd of Cullowhee. His presence should be viewed as a statement on the recognition achieved by glass- blowers of North Carolina. In addition to several works by Littleton, nine North Carolina artists are represented in the exhibit: William Bernstein of Celo Community, Jack Brewer of Blowing Rock, Blaine Eldridge of Sylva, Gilbert C. Johnson of Celo Community, Robert Levin of Pen- land, David Nichols of Cullowhee, John Nygren of Walnut Cove, Mark Peiser of Penland, and Richard Ritterof Penland. The possibilities of glass are endless, as evidenced by the effects achieved. The viewer is amused by Bernstein's whimsical "Bear Jar"; awed by Johnson's ethereal, sensuous veiled forms; enchanted by Peiser's tiny, iridescent, and somehow ancient vases; delighted by Levin's "E- lectric Rock Group w/ Two Rock t^- I KNOW THAT MANY OF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE ECONOMY *P- A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE PROPOSED THAT WE BROADEN OUR SOCIAL PROGRAMS TO HELP THE POOR. THE ILL, THE ELDERLY AND THE NEEDY ... -^ ... BUT I THINK THAT IS A DANGEROUS POLICY WHILE I AM PRESIDENT OF THIS COUNTRY, WE ARE WOT GOING TO DRIFT TOWARD SOCIALISM. WE'RE JUST GOING TO DRIFT. Fans". Nygren's delicate dragonfly bottle transcends time and returns us to an earlier century, and Nichols' rich floral vases rediscover the organic theme and restate it in contemporary terms. When the easter colors of Ritter's "Azure Sunrise" meet on a classic form, the result is jewellike. Each of Brewer's bottles is, in itself, a magic object; and Eldridge's leaded glass forms are unique in that they are able to reflect both the artist and the viewer. As one walks through the gallery, one is aware of the presence of a harmony existing between the glass objects, which seem to breathe beneath the light which plays so well upon their varied surfaces. . Whether the show was seen, complete with added attractions on Sunday, or viewed in a solitary moment, it is certain to affect the visual senses in a uniquely satisfying way.
