  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/April 24, 1980/ Page 15 The^Jvfestern Cafofinjon Sports No. 2 in a nation only got us by 3 Gamecocks down Cats Western Carolina University's baseball team tangled with the number two team in the nation, South Carolina, this weekend, and came just 3 runs short of an upset, as the Gamecocks outscored the Cats 13-10 in a game played Sunday afternoon in Cullowhee. South Carolina. 26-9 after the win, jumped on the Cats quickly in the first inning for three runs, keyed by a two-run homer by Paul Hollins that chased Catamount starter Ken Hares (2-3). The Gamecocks stretched the lead out to 10-4, largely on the hitting of Etienne Farquharson (4-5, 5RBI's), and Hollins (4-5, 5 RBI's). The Cats came back for two runs in the seventh and then exploded for 4 runs in the eighth to narrow the gap to 11-10. The big inning was keyed by a run-scoring double by Kyle Radford, Mel Kinsey's two run double and a RBI ground out by Jim Reinicker. The Cats allowed two more USC runs in the ninth off receiver David Robinson, and in the ninth the Cats put one runner on before Willie Carpenter grounded out to end the threat. USC ripped 20 hits off WCU, with the Cats adding 15. The loss to the Gamecocks followed a doubleheader split with Marshall on Saturday. The Cats won the first game, 4-3, on a one-out, bases-loaded single in the eighth inning by Billy Boyd. The Cats, who led 3-0 going into the sixth, had the score tied when DH Greg Hill blasted a three-run homer off starter Lin Stadler. Western scored the winning run after walks to David Hill, Jim Reinicker and Matt Thrasher loaded the bases. Marshall starter and loser, Grant Campbell, then gave up the game-winner to Boyd on a 1-0 pitch. Marshall won the second game of the doubleheader 4-1 on the strength of Gary Nelson's 10-hit pitching. Nelson, 3-1, walked only one in the seven inning game, and gave the Cats just two doubles and eight singles. The Cats only run came in the second when Mel Linsey score on a run-down play on. a steal attempt by Thrasher. Marshall picked up one run in the first, and took the lead for good in the fifth when Cat starter Randy Sims (4-3) wild pitched a run in. Paul Simmons added a solo home run in the sixth and the Herd picked up an insurance run in the seventh on Mark Crouch's RBI single. The Cats, 18-12 overall and 5-3 in the conference, travel to Charleston. SC this weekend to take on The Citadel in an important Southern Conference double- header. Wins by the Cats could put them into second place in the conference. Bat Cats . . . Update Western Carolina improved its record to 20-12 and stayed in the Southern Conference title hunt with a doubleheader sweep over VMI Wednesday afternoon in Cullowhee. WCU won the first game 4-3 and came back to take the second 13-7 to improve its conference record to 7-3. Women's tennis season over Defending state singles tennis champ Hope McAra of Davidson smashes a high overhead taring Saturday's action in the NCAIAW Tournament held at WCU. Defending champs Davidson tied with Guilford College for the second place position, each with 26 points. UNC-Charlotte was next with 16 points. « In number 1 singles competition defending champ Emmy Knoblock of Davidson defeated Shirley Dunn of Guilford College in a close match, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6. Defending champ Hope McArn of Davidson defeated Sheila Ernest of UNC-Charlotte, 7-5, 6-2 in #2 singles. Kerry Kennedy of Guilford defeated Kathy Neblett of High Point in #3 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. In number 4 singles, Helen O'Brien of High Point defeated Sharon Phillips of Guilford 7-5, 6-3. Susie Urmston of High Point defeated Pfeiffer College's only player in singles finals Marilyn Freeman, 6-2, 6-4. Finally in #6, Marie Riley of High Point defeated Joan Murray of Guilford 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Doubles finals were dominated by High Point College claiming 2 of 3 championships. In #1 doubles, Williams-Neblett of High Point defeated Romeo-Ernest of UNC-Charlotte, 6-2, 7-5. The High Point defeat came in #2 with the Guilford team defeating the High Point team, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Defending champs Riley-Otterman of High Point defeated Morgan-Horine of Davidson 6-4, 6-1 in #3 doubles. Finishing the final team standings were Pfeiffer (14 points), Atlantic Christian (12), East Carolina (12), Mars Hill (9'/t), UNC-Wilmington (9), Western Carolina (7), St. Augustine's (6); Catawba (5), Lenoir-Rhyne (4), Elon (3'/2), Pembroke (l'/j), UNC- Asheville (Vi). Fierce pitching action predominated yesterday's win over the Keydets of Virginia Military Institute. Coach Bill Haywood's young Cats stayed in the running for the SWC season title with a set of impressive victories yesterday, easily toppling VMI 13-7 in the second game after a 4-3 warm-up in the first game. Lady Cats finish season 10th The women's tennis team completed the 1980 season with a 10th place finish in the sixteen team State AIAW Division II championships held in Cullowhee January 17-19. High Point College won the team honors with 30 points followed by Davidson and Guilford College with 26 points. UNC-Charlotte placed fourth with 16 points. Concluding the team standings were #5 Pfeiffer (14), #6 Atlantic Christian (12), and also ECU (12), #8 Mars Hill (9 1/2), #9 UNC-Wilmington (9), #10 WCU (7), #11 St. Augustine's (6), Catawba (5), Lenoir-Rhyne (4), Elon (3 1/2). Pembroke (1 1/2), and UNC-Asheville ille (1/2). High Point claimed victories in the #4, #5, and #6 singles and two of three doubles championships. Davidson's Emmy Knobloch was the number one singles champion. WCU finished the season 4-8.
