  • Western Carolinian February 16, 1995 Sports Cats Bitten By Bulldogs Jason Queen Staff Reporter CULLOWHEE-Coming off a tough loss at Marshall Monday night and facing a must-win situation, it was certain that Western would come out of the locker room Saturday night ready to rough up The Citadel. Something crazy happened between the locker room and the playing court, however, and the Bulldogs sneaked out of Cullowhee with a 69-68 victory. Catamount guard Frankie King led all scorers with 27 points on 11 of 20 shooting. Anquell McCollum and Kevin Kullum chipped in 14 apiece. Western sleepwalked through most of the first half. After jumping out to a 4-0 lead, the Cats fell victim to a huge 23-4 Citadel run that took merely five minutes. This run proved to be the key to the game. McCollum's steal and lay-up with 2:08 left in the half cut The Citadel's lead to 34-29, but the Bulldogs Coach Benny Dees' reaction during The Citadel game says it all. Photo By Tyrone kept Western at bay and went to the locker room with a 40-33 lead. Bulldog guard Noy Castillo ate the Cats alive in the first half, connecting on four three-point bombs and finishing with 14 points. Both teams battled back and forth for the first portion of the second half. The Citadel maintained its seven point lead during this stretch, and held a 57-50 lead with 9:13 left to play. But the Cats showed their first sign of life all night and exploded. Tim Ford's free throw at the 5:12 mark capped off an 8- 0 run that found Western ahead 58-57. McCollum's lay- up a minute later pushed the Catamount lead to 62-59. But like so many runs to rally from a large deficit, this run sucked all the life out of the Cats. The Citadel responded with an 8-0 run of their own to take a 67-62 lead with 1:17 left, and this lead proved to be insurmountable. McCollum hit three free throws to cut the lead to two, and Western did get the ball back with 32 seconds left with a chance to tie or win. But Scott Scholtz missed a tough turnaround jumper in the lane with four ticks left and a Bulldog pulled down the rebound to put the game away. NOTES: McCollum's shooting funk continued Saturday night. He was only 4 of 13 from the floor ... Castillo finished with 19 points to lead a balanced Bulldog attack ... The Cats started out 4-0 in the Southern Conference, but have since gone 1-4. Coach Benny Dees said, "We just can't get the team to play consistently." Hours- LUNCH(11-2): Mon., Wed., Thurs. & Fri.
