  • 22 Western Carolinian February 16, 1995 Sports JPl, JPIJm. ^•*<M»^-^,JHr^P ^*»* ^fc^R, MtJaW W? Jason Queen Staff Reporter CHATTANOOGA, TN- Well, chances are, if you blinked you missed it. Only a few short weeks ago Western's men's basketball team found itself 4-0 in the Southern Conference and sitting comfortably atop the South Division. Six games and one win later, however, the Catamounts aren't very comfortable at all. The team's skid continued Monday night in Chattanooga, Tennessee, as the Mocs used a strong second half to down Western 76-65. Anquell McCollum paced a balanced attack for the Cats with 22 points. His subpar shooting continued, however; he shot only 7 of 18 from the floor. The first half was a seesaw battle from start to finish which featured three ties and six lead changes. Western enjoyed its biggest lead of the half when McCollum drilled a three- pointer with three minutes left to put the Cats ahead 31-27. McCollum hit another jumper before intermission to give Western a slim 33-30 halftime edge. With confidence and hunger in their eyes, the Cats stormed out of the locker room looking to put the game out of reach early in the second half Guard Frankie King hit a free throw and McCollum popped another three ball to give Western a comfortable 37-30 advantage. But UTC then exploded, going on an 8-0 run of their own to regain the lead 38-37. Both teams battled back and forth for a while, and McCollum's two free throws at the 10:00 mark knotted the score at 51-51. On the ensuing possession, the Mocs made the biggest play of the night. Guard Pat Henderson was fouled while shooting. He hit the first free throw, missed the second, and UTC corralled the rebound. He kicked it out to Maurio Hanson who promptly drained a three- pointer, giving the Mocs a 55-51 lead; they never trailed again. Catamount freshman Jarvis Graham hit a shot to close the gap to 57-55 moments later, but the Cats could get no closer than four the rest of the way. NOTES: King finished with 21 points on the night; Graham and Scott Scholtz chipped in 8 apiece... Fouls were the story of the second half UTC hit 22 of 28 free throws in the half while Western hit only 9 of 14... Roger Smith and Brandon Born led the Mocs with 17 points...
