  • PAGE 10 Arts & Entertainment What's Hot, What's Not. "It's a Dog's Life" Dog owners will be happy to know that their cute, cuddly friends can now be up to date in the fashion world. The four-footed animal can dress, accessorize, groom and eat like a human. It's true! What' hot today is dressing your dog in the latest trends. We spoke to Sharon Gregory-Smith of Petagree Supplies in Sylva who toured us through the shop which is equipted with the latest "doggy fashions." They have a variety of outer wear for dogs, the biggest sellers being the sweaters which come in an assortment of colors with sayings printed on them such as, "I love my dog." If your dog likes the ski slopes, the line of parkas are wonderful, fully lined on one side with a parka-look on the other. But your dog's a preppie? No problem. They even have a reversible plaid jacket that would make any "P- Yuppie" jealous. And last, the new trench coat, fully waterproofed in classic tan, for that rainy day in Western Carolina. Well, how about some accessories? Whether your dog is macho, sweet or punk, Petagree Supplies has it all. The basic thick leather collars are still popular and come in a variety of widths with either metal studs or plain. For the female dog, pretty, delicate collars ranging in color from lavender to shocking pink are decorated with rhinestones. Above all, the lastest for your punk rock dog - yes, neon bright collars. The basic "no more tears shampoo" is still a big seller for grooming. Along with thisisacreme rinse so your pet can have a flowing, bouncy coat. Nail polish will always be in fashion for smaller dogs, but what surprised us was stored on the shelf to our right. It's called "Four Paws Cologne." It's not Polo or Chanel, but one especially scented for the dog on the prowl. The way to keep a dog happy is through his stomach. Of course you have your average dog food and dog biscuits, but would you wa nt to eat that every day? To spice up your pet's diet there are new snacks on the market. They have nutri-cheese snacks that look like little cheese crackers. Also newisthe snack call "Pup-Peroni" sticks which look like Slim-Jim beef sticks but flavored with pepperoni. Lastly, the newest is the Pizza Biscuit. It is a biscuit actually shaped like a whole pizza, cut into six triangles, and garnished with dried spices. So, we could actually say it's a dog's life. If you want to give your best friend the latest fash ions, visit Petagree Supplies in Sylva and dress, accessorize, groom and feed your dog with what's hot. by Stephanie Crocitto/Karen Sue Howard F.M.A. Fashion Writers a 9 Gaetano to be Featured Artist Mario Gaetano, percussionist and director of Western Carolina University's jazz ensemble, will be the featured artist in a recital of contemporary solo and chamber works Sunday, Oct. 13, at 4 p.m. inthe recital hall of the Music-English Building at WCU. The recital is free and open to the public. It will open with Bela Bartok's "Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion" with Asheville pianists Dewitt Tipton and Suzanne Dixon and percussionist Bryon Hedgepeth After an intermission, Gaetano will perform "Two Movements for Marimba" by Japanese Composer Toshimitso Tanaka. The program will conclude with David Burge's "Sources III" for percussion and clarinet, with Maxie E. Beaver, WCU associate professor of music, clarinet. Gaetano, WCU music instructor, holds a bachelor's degree in music, performer's certificate and merit award from the State University of New York, Potsdam, and a master's degree in music from East Carolina University, where he also received a young artist award. He has performed widely as a soloist, composed numerous percussion pieces, and published articles on teaching percussion. LADY PANK? maybe not in the u.s. Lady Pank is a new band that caught my attention immediately as an innovative effort among the army of artists now hitting the scene. Lady Pank is a Polish group and they have released their debut record, Drop Everything, in the U.S.A. After listening to the album a few times, I decided it was a hit. This is rare for me because it usually takes me longer to make a judgement on an album. The record plays witha hard raggaebeatand overall hasan aggressive feel to it, but not hardcore. The lyrics lean toward theangrysideand are sung by Janusz Panasewicz, in his native accent which makes the songs sound harsh. This harshness is what grabbed my attention and think you will like it too. The guitar work is hipness and there are many riffs which do justice to the overall concept of the album. Drop Everything, is produced by Dane Leaper and Lady Pank. Usually a group will not'help in the production of a debut album, but Lady Pank has broken the rules and has successfully put out a good debut. My favorite tracks are Do,Do, Hustler, Minus Zero, and Hero. When you listen to Drop Everything, you may find some political paranoia, but this is to be expected, coming from one of the U.S.S.R.'s satellite countries. Althouogh I am enthusiastic about Lady Pank, something tells me that this is not music for the general public or should I say "those wonderful top 40 play lists." Lady Pank will go over well among college and alternative stations, but I don't see Casey Kasem raving about this band on his weekly show. As expected Drop Everything will probably be big in Europe, but knowing America's taste in music the hit track won't even be played (with the exception of alternative radio). I do recommend Lady Pank, Drop Everything to people who don't like Top 40.
