  • LOBED LEAVES-Oaks BLACK OAK SOUTHERN RED OAK has variable leaves, all with yellow-gray down on the underside; most of them, in any tree, display the long "finger" tip. The fall color is dull orange, and the acorn is small. This is an uncommon tree of dry areas below 2,000 feet. SCARLET OAK leaves are shiny on both surfaces, and turn blazing scarlet in the fall. The acorn is larger that that of the above, and is marked with from one to three rings around the tip. This tree is abundant in pinelands below 3,500 feet. NORTHERN RED OAK has yellow-green leaves that are dull on both sides, turning dull red or orange in the fall. The acorn is the 18
