  • February 16, 1995 Western Carolinian 15 Editorial Marriott Cutback Causes Uproar "Things have gotten out of hand. it Dear Editor, We are having some troubles at Western Carolina University. It seems the new year is filled with bad news for the employees and in many cases the students. Since Marriott took over all aspects of food services, things have gotten out of hand. Prices are soaring, changes have been made and not all have been for the better. One of many issues raised by the students are prices in comparison to portions served. They are not happy about it as many are working their way through school without any help. They are faced with long lines, long waits for their meals; they come into the cafeterias without a happy face to greet them because now Marriott along with the help of the university is trying to give many a hardworking employee the shaft by trying to implement a plan to cut their salaries and make the twelve month employees into nine month employees. How can a university tamper with so many people's lives and expect to have happy people working for as well as patronizing, their establishment ? All of these issues should be examined carefully to find the most beneficial ways to work them out so all involved can be comfortable with the system under which they have to operate. Thanks for your time, — Many concerned people Alumnus noticed "extra work and stress" in Marriott workers I recently visited WCU campus as I do from time to time. It's home to me and many of my friends are still there. Some of them were sitting around talking and waiting for one of the cafeterias to open. Good food that's readily available to the student is important. The UC snack bar was always a favorite place for me. The homemade bruits and gravy to wake you up in the morning would keep your stomach growls down during the 8:00 classes. Changes have occurred in food service, but many of us haven't forgotten those smiling familiar faces behind the serving counters. These ladies were moms to all of us, n°t just their sons and daughters, also students, but where have they gone? For a little extra cash, flipping a hamburger would get that tough exam off your mind for a while. Well, we finally got through the long line, but couldn't figure which cashier to aPproach with our cherished meal cards, wondering if the funds will hold to semesters er>d with the increase in prices. It seems pasta has taken the place of meat or if you want 311 you can eat try facing that cold wind walking up the hill to Brown between classes SaVs one of my friends. The business men and women are eating well with their meal <*«Js (compliments of Marriot). No refills on our drinks though and not much mi the*. Assert cups. Well I still didn't see all smiling faces. Some had faded with extra work and stress ° )* changes, new Marriot managers who don't want to help state employees and maybe no job for the summer if 12 month classified are changed to 9 month. Wonder *lhy l did"'t read about all this in the school newspaper? Maybe this writing will be m an »ssue that will reach the state and concerned parents as well. Speak up students you *«'d make a difference. How we treat people we come in daily contact with reflects ftat we have learned about life. Sincerely, A Concerned Alumnus "Job security at risk ..." Western Carolina University recently made public news on Channel 4. The issue: Job security, do you have it? Well until recently employees at WCU food service thought they did. Marriott came in and took over, promising better jobs, better wages and better treatment. Well, promises don't go far when you're dealing with discrimination. We've heard that you can't be judged on your age, sex, color - well what about if you worked for WCU food services for years before Marriott took over? Now we're told that's bad, very bad. We have employees who have worked for WCU for 10,15, even 20 years devoting their whole life to giving service to WCU students and earning a living. Now these same employees are being told that their years of service are not worth anything. Their wages are being cut back, and their hours shortened to cover labor costs. Why? So Marriott can have fun spending the students money redecorating? We don't believe the students would rather have new carpet or new lines at the expense of poorer quality food and less efficient service. Marriott has the idea that the employees are overpaid! Does that mean to get rid of them and hire inefficient, slower, undependable but cheaper staff? To them it does! Can students afford to stand in longer lines waiting for service because of labor costs? Would they want to see harassed, overworked and underpaid employee's faces as they come through the lines because of labor cutbacks? We've talked to people in administration with no results. We wonder how they would feel if it were their jobs at risk. Marriott has issued warnings that 12 month employees will no longer have their positions in the summer months. Can students that go to summer school stand in long lines behind summer camps, gifted children, and elder hostel groups? We don't think so! We must speak out in freedom of the press. Marriott has discriminated against these employees. Marriott came to WCU stating that our jobs were secured. We were allowed to have a meal each day, but when we came back from Christmas break they laid the bombshell on those that have worked here for years: their wages would be cut during summer, and some may not even get to work. The ones that do will get whatever Marriott chooses to pay them and money for meals will be taken out of their checks, and they had better not be caught eating anything. These rules were for state employees only, not for Marriott employees. Grievances were filed against Marriott but nothing has been done. Does that mean that no one cares enough to do anything? Good luck students on whatever Marriott decides to do to you next. After all it's your money they're dealing with as they see fit. Profit is the name of Marriott's game. If you don't believe that, then look at the cash register receipt, even if it's just for a candy bar! Is it being on a job 13 years and suddenly being told you could be laid off tomorrow - Or being told that your wages were cut by $3,000 dollars a year - or that you would only get to work 9 months of the year? Or that your retirement benefits would be shortened? Or that 3 months of the year you won't get to work unless you leave your family and work on cruise ships or Marriott camps out of state - or that you must figure out a way to pay your loans at the State Employee Credit Union because you won't be drawing a check to pay it? Or that even when you're out of work, you can't draw unemployment because you work for a school and Marriott won't pay it in for you if you're a state employee? Marriott employees may draw, but you can't because you've given all these years to feed the students before Marriott took over. I don't know what feeling secure in your job means anymore since Marriott took over. We would like to hear your input, students, as to what you think about the things that are being done with your money? Are the higher prices and smaller portions of food pleasing to you? Are the labor cutbacks and longer lines you'll have in the future going to work for you? Will class teachers take your excuse that the line was backed up in the cafeteria? The UC snack bar will be closing in March so the cafeteria or food court are your options. Write your newspaper and let us know how you feel!
