Western finished with 74 points, only 38 behind Clemson and 42 ahead of third place finisher East Tennessee State. The Cats were led by Bill Baldwin, who finished sixth overall.only 30 seconds behind Clemson's Joe Gibson, who placed first with a time of 25:51 on the five-mile course. Gibson's winning score is one of the fastest scores recorded on the course, and the top 18 times in the men's race were faster than the winner of the meet last year. Head Coach Danny Williamson said the men's team was expected to finish as high as they did. Bill Baldwin says that the second-place finish is a great sign that "extraordinary" things will come about for Western this season. Hosting the meet seemed to be an advantage for the Catamounts who describe the WCU course as one of the toughest run on all year. "This course is the hardest course we'll run all year, by far," said Baldwin. Baldwin described the terrain as a "strength course" that will help the Cats run well when they take to the "speed courses" later in the year. "A couple of us could have run better, but we're gonna get 'em. It'll just take a little time," Baldwin said. The women's meet saw East Tennessee State emerge victorious, followed by Georgia Tech and Clemson. Western finished ninth with a score of 216. Sophomore Charlotte Robson was the highest finisher for the Catamounts with a time of 19:47, 45th place. Katharine Berry of ETSU finished first with a time of 17:36 on the 3.1-mile course. Bill Baldwin leads the Cats. Photo by Seth Sams Robson says that she is happy to get this season off to a good start after a disappointing last season. "No matter what, I'll be better than last year, I think," said Robson. "Last year was such a bad year." "We have a lot of young runners on the women's side, but they came through rather well," said Williamson. "They were a little bit better than I expected." "I think we surprised coach [Williamson] a little," said Robson. If the Lady Cats continue to work together and feed off each other, then more surprises will come, concluded Robson. Both teams will travel to Clemson this weekend to take part in the Clemson Invitational. Intramural Update t.
