The Lady Cats notched 11 wins in each of their last two seasons, and with four regular season games remaining, they have a chance to produce more wins than any team since the 1982-83 campaign which produced a 17-10 mark. Earlier in the week the Lady Cats dropped their seventh conference game, 87-80, to two- time Southern Conference champion Appalachian State. WCU is in sixth place in the conference standings with a 1-7 record, while ASU remained a half game out of first place with a 7-1 mark. WCU's Laura Vannnoy, junior point guard from Moravian Falls, North Carolina, was nom' nated for the conference player-of- the-week for her 39 point performance in the Lady Cats' two outings. Vannoy led WCU in points and rebounds against ASU, scoring 17 and pulling down nine rebounds. She notched 22 points against area-rival Mars Hill, while adding three steals and three assists to her team-leading Laura Vannoy totals. Western Carolina's rematch with Liberty, scheduled for Saturday night in Lynchburg, Virginia, was postponed due to the hazardous road conditions. The game has been re-scheduled for Thursday, March 2, and will now be the season finale for the Lady Cats. WCU will play its last four games on the road, beginning with a contest with UNC Charlotte, Friday, February 24, in Charlotte. The Lady Cats will try to make a clean sweep of the Lady 49ers this year as WCU defeated UNCC, 77-72 in an Shirley Shannon earlier game this season. Sunday, February 26, the Lady Cats will travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee, looking to avenge a 92-69 loss to the Lady Mocs in their final meeting this year. UTC is currently third in the conference race with a 3-4 mark, and its overall record is 14-10. Junior forward Shirley Shannon continues to lead the Lady Cats with an 11.3 scoring average. Vannoy adds 10.5 points per outing while sophomore Roxanne Williams adds 10.0 points and a team high 6.0 rebounds per contest. Catamount Baseball Team Frustrated By Rain; Returns To The Road To Face Powerful N.C. State By FRANK LAMM Carolinian Staff Writer Western Carolina's baseball team went into this past weekend with a sense of relief following a tough road trip to start the season. But Mother Nature played a cruel trick on the Cats as they prepared to open their home schedule with a four game series against Carson-Newman. The series was originally planned to have one game on Friday, a doubleheader on Saturday followed by a single game on Sun day. However, early Friday morning the rain came. Then Saturday the snow came. Luckily for both schools, neither team had a game during the week. But Monday the rain came again. Tuesday, it was decided that the field was unplayable. "We are going to try to get two games of this series in. If not Tuesday, then Wednesday, or Thursday, said Steve White, the Cats' Sports Information Director. Outside of this four-game series, Western and Carson-Newman will meet for three other games. The two teams will play one game at Western on Wednesday, March 1, and one game on April 25. The only game at Carson-Newman will be on April 28. If this weekend's games cannot be made up this week, they will probably be added onto these later dates. The Catamounts will once again head on the road this coming weekend when they will face the North Carolina State Wolfpack, in Raleigh, N.C. The two teams will play doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday. The Cats will then go to Clemson, S.C. for one game with the Clemson Tigers on Tuesday. Western's next home game will be against Carson-Newman March L By LAURA GOFF Carolinian Staff Writer In June of 1985, Southwest Onslow High School said good-bye to its salutatorian as he made his way toward Western Carolina University. Being in a new milieu, surrounded by new people, as with most of us, he was unsure of what to expect. Little did he know that Western Carolina University would be the starting point of his career. That salutatorian was Craig Wells. He came to Western in 1985 from Jacksonville, NC, and after three and a half years of college graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management with a minor in Radio/Television. He is now Assistant Sports Information Director at Western as well as the Assistant Tennis Coach. Along with being Steve White's right-hand man, Craig Wells finds himself occupied with a wide variety of duties. He prepares weekly press releases for baseball, cross-country, track and field, and all women's sports; he produces the daily radio sports calendar, assists in preparation of football and basketball publications, gathers and organizes statistics and reference materials, produces and hosts the basketball Coach's Show on the radio, and works with the basketball promotions team. And then there are his duties as the assistant tennis coach; these consist of preparing recruiting materials, on-court coaching duties, organizing statistical data and handling team publicity. His position in the Western Carolina University Sports Information Department was established in January of 1989 on a temporary basis. Steve White needed someone to help him handle all of the demands of the upcoming season, and Craig Wells, accordingly, needed the help as well as the experience. Not that Craig Wells didn't already have any experience behind him—in fact, before he even attended WCU Craigheld a part-time job at the radio station WIIZ-AM and WLAS-AM in Jacksonville, NC. During his three and a half years at Western, he completed a part-time internship in sports and news departments, and interned as Sports Director of WWCU, which later MEN'S SCORES THURSDAY. FEB. 26 WCU at UTC _ — _ — ■—' —■ ■ - inrad ivimzcy pm Craig is hard at work again for Sports Program promoted him to Program Director. It was during this involvement with WWCU that Craig began to take on a new insight into sports. He had a small interest in sports before working at WWCU, but his only involvement in sports was participating in tennis duringhis senior year of high school. In fact, when he decided to work at WWCU, it was only because of his interest in radio. At WWCU, he worked with Barry Kirsch as a spectator, and began to get involved with sports, the media, and their interrelationship. Thus, his interest for sports increased, but in the perspective of sports information. After Barry graduated, Craig took over his position and became Sports Director for two and a half years. During those years, he initiated the Catamount Calendar, which is a daily update on sports, and the Coaching Show on Saturday with Coach Dave Possinger, both of which have received great responses. Finally realizing that he had a great interest in sports along the lines of sports information, Craig took on another internship as Assistant Sports Information Director just these past several months. Since then, he has acquired more abilities and has even initiated some other abilities such as his writing skills, which weren't acknowledged until his senior year at WCU. "Unlike other intern, Craig possessed writing skills," replies Steve White, who is Sports Information Director at Western. He has turned out to be a "pleasant surprise," says White, who was unsure of what to expect from Wells at first. Yet, he has "definitely proven to be an asset, with his versatility, personality, and responsibility," according to White. Now, with June right around the corner, Craig Wells will have to terminate his position as Assistant Sports Information Director. Although he would love to continue on at WCU and as much as Steve White and the student body will hate to see him go, there are no available openings for Craig, unless the sports department created one. Unfortunately, at the present time, Western is unable to do that. However, Craig does intend to stay at the college level of sports. Although not quite ready for the professional sports level, he hopes to head in that direction. With all of his acquired experience, he definitely has his foot in the door as well as the "feel" for sports information. The WCU-Georgia Tech football game, tentatively scheduled to be played in Toulouse, France, November 4, will now be played in Atlanta, Georgia on the same date. Dr. Homer Rice, Georgia Tech's Director of Athletics, said Georgia Tech and the sponsoring organizations were unable to reach a contractual agreement by a designated deadline date. "We FOOTBALL (CONTINUED) corners Ricky Gardin and Terrell Wagner return as full-time or part-time starters. In addition, two starters from the 1987 season-linebackers Wayne Parker andCalvinGist are expected to be full speed after missing all of last season rehabilitating from knee surgeries. Punter Anthony Bare and place kicker Clay Cox also return as starters at their respective positions. Waters says he will reserve comments on the strengths and weaknesses of his '89 squad until the completion of spring practice. "Next season's team might not have as talented football players at some positions, but I can assure you that you will be able to recognize it as a football team," he emphasized. had certain contractual agreements and a deadline that was extended on several occasions. We finally reached a date that we could not go beyond because of the need to finalize our home football schedule for our season ticket applications," he explained. Although a general agreement was reached with regard to details for the game, afinal contract had yet to be offered by Martha, the French aerospace firm which was the major sponsor, by the deadline date set by Georgia Tech of January 15,1989. Although several deadline extentions were offered, Martha was still unable to complete the negotiations. Dr. Terry Wanless, WCU's Director of Athletics, expressed disappointment over the announcement. "It was very disappointing news. It was going to be a great publicity vehicle for our University and a unique educational and cultural experience for our football players." WCU will announce its complete 1989 football schedule within the next two weeks. Become Involved And Support WCU Athletics
