  • Sports The Western Carolinian Page 13 (continued) Thursday, February 23,1989 WCU Tracksters Turn In Respectable Showing at Conference Tourney Western Carolina University's men's and women's indoor track and field teams completed their winter schedule this past weekend with respectable -performances at the Southern Conference Championships held in Johnson City, TN. As a team, WCUs men finished fourth while the women placed fifth, as Western athletes took all-conference honors in eight different events. The Catamounts men's squad finished the meet with a team total of 58, placing them behind Appalachian State (132), Virginia Military Institute (128) and East Tennessee State (96), and ahead of The Citadel (39), Marshall (32), Furman (7) and UT-Chattanooga (4). Tony McK- ennie highlighted the efforts with second place showings in the 55- meter hurdles (7.43) and the 800- meter run (1:54.19), both of which earned him all-conference honors. Also named to the All-Conference team for WCU were Frank Gardin in the shot (2nd, 51.8), Ricky Gar- din in the triple jump (3rd, 46'7"), David Mayfield in the high jump (2nd, 6'51/2"), and the mile relay team of Andy Schultz, Edmond McClendon, Brian Sellers and McKennie (3rd, 3:18.10). "I was pleased with our performances, although I think we could have finished a bit higher," said WCU's head coach Danny Williamson. "We didn't take full advantage of all of the opportunities that were presented. Hopefully we can use this and see our mistakes so that we don't make the same mistakes again down the road." The women's squad placed fifth in the team standings for the meet with a total of 18 points. Appalachian State (215) took top honors on the women's side, also, followed by East Tennessee State (99), Marshall (68), UT-Chattanooga (31), WCU, and Furman (0). Earning all-conference honors for Western's women was Amy Todd, who placed third in the finish with a time of 4:12.02 was also worthy of all-conference honors. Williamson feels that his team may have done better if it wasn't for a touch of bad luck. WCU's Kim Johnson, who holds several school records in middle distance events, suffered an ankle injury on the day of the meet, leaving an already thin squad even more limited. "That disaster hurt us further after several athletes had left or been dismissed from the team in the past week," said Williamson. "I'm proud of all of the team because they did what they could to pick up the slack. Our very young squad needed someone to lead them and Kim was one who they could look to for that leadership." The Southern Conference meet concluded Western Carolina's indoor season, and the Catamount teams will now begin preparing for the outdoors, scheduled to begin with a March 11 date at Davidson, NC, with the Davidson Invitational. "It has been a good indoor season for us," concluded Williamson. "It was something we needed to get our young athletes some experience. We have 25 freshmen, which is a lot for any program, and I am proud of their efforts throughout this winter. Hopefully, we can grow up even more before the outdoor season starts." Catamount Rally Not Enough To Scalp Mocs By RICHARD SUMNER Carolinian Staff Writer CHATTANOOGA, TN. - A second half rally of 10 points was not enough to lift the Cats over the Moccasins of Tennessee-Chattanooga Saturday night in a Southern Conference matchup. The first place Mocs took control and handed Western its ninth defeat in the conference and 13th overall, 72-64. UTCjumpedtoal6-31eadwith 11:22 remaining in the first half, as the Cats were only able to hit one of 11 attempts from the field. The Mocs converted seven of the first 10 shots, including a 3 for 3 effort from Benny Green. Western did not give up, despite being down by 13 twice in the first half. At the halftime buzzer the Mocs held onto a seven point advantage, 40-33. Halftime defensive adjustments by Western head coach Dave Possinger sparked the Catamounts withalO-Orunin the first four minutes of the second half, allowing the Cats to pull ahead 43- 40 with 16:05 on the clock. One Moccasin basket later, two Bennie Goettie free throws extended the lead to five, at 47-42. A quick steal and slam-dunk by UTC's Chris Behrends launched the quick demise of the Cats'hope. Four more points from Behrends and a three-pointer from Daren Chandler turned the Moccasin deficit into a 57-50 lead with 8:33 left to play. UTC continued its domination over Western on the boards and stretched the lead to its biggest at 69-54, as the Mocs outscored the Cats 12-4 by the 3:14 mark. Donald Jenkins' 15-footer capped the effort. The lead never fell below ten until Goettie came up with a steal and an easy layup to bring the Cats within eight. UTC held the ball for the final seconds to clinch their ninth victory in the conference (9-4, 5-11) and hold onto first place, 72- 64. Possinger credited the Cats defense for the second half comeback, but also spoke of dumb fouls and rebounding costing the Cats the game. "We did it with our defense...we made a lot of defensive mistakes in the first half and committed some really dumb fouls. This (UTC) is one of the best free throw shooting teams in the conference..." and we committed "...fouls 30 feet from the basket." Both teams shot 49 percent from the field (UTC 28 of 57, WCU 23 of 47). The Mocs scored 12 points on a 12 of 19 night from the line, while the Cats hit 13 of 17. The rebounding marks were very uneven as UTC outrebounded the Cats 36-25. "We didn't stop playing," was the high praise Possinger had for his team. "It could have been over at 16- 3, but we kept playing hard. With the effort we showed, I feel very positive about playing well in our last four games." Bennie Goettie led the Western scoring with 19 points, but has not broken 20 in the last eleven games. The game did mark the 28th straight game in which he has scoredin double figures. Keith Gray scored 15 points, including three 3- pointers. Robert Hill was the only other Cat in doubles with 11. David Donerlson, who was suffering from the flu, hit eight points along with Terry Miller. Myron Lewis came off the bench to add three. The Mocs were lead by Chris Behrends with 20 points. Daren Chandler added 14. UTC is now 11/2 games ahead of both App. State and Furman in the conference race. Western holds a monopoly on the last spot. Baring very unusual circumstances, the Cats will once again meet the Mocs in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament, 2:30 p.m. March 3rd in the Asheville Civic Center.
