  • interstates were closed across the country including a 100- mile section of Interstate 10 around Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana that was closed for several hours. The cold destroyed a major percentage of the Florida citrus crop recently; a damage that will confront consumers in supermarkets this winter and spring. Orange growers that two weeks ago were marvelling at overflowing groves just entering the peak season, are now financially devastated as their efforts to ward off frost were unsuccessful. On January 10 and 11, the National Weather Service said temperatures in Embarrass, Minn, dropped to 46 degrees below zero with a wind chill factor of 70 below and in Fargo, N.D. the wind chill factor made 19 below zero temperature feel like 80 below. The wind chill factor is a calculation weather experts use to describe the combined effects of wind and cold temperatures. Last week-end Great Falls, Minn, experienced a 142 below zero wind chill factor, and many other Northern cities experienced wind chill factors of under 100 degrees below zero. In southern California mudslides that ravaged over 150 miles of northern California coast caused several deaths in Marin County just north of San Francisco. In Merton, Wisconsin, an elderly man froze to death Friday when he reportedly lost the key to his home in the snow. Waukesha County coroner Donald J. Eggum said Walter J. Hockmusth, 70, was found stuck ina window in an attempt to climb in his house. The Asheville Bureau of the National Weather Service said that in addition to an abundance of precipitation, the poor weather conditions have been caused by a lowering of the jet stream, ora lowering of the path that cold and warm air usually travel on. The weather service said that local weather should remain near normal through the weekend. Slippin9 and Sliding niel and Mark Haskett •
