westerns* • arolinian Catamounts Pound Paladins ■ Sweet Victory After 0-2 Conference Start by Donald Costello Western used an 18-3 run early in the second half, a tenacious 1 -3-1 defense, and precision ball control to roll over the Furman Paladins, 95-78, Saturday night in the Ramsey Center. The Cats were led by Bobby Phillips and Joel Fleming who both posted double- doubles in the winning effort. Phillips scored a team high 20 points and 13 rebounds in 40 minutes on the floor. Fleming became the first Southern Conference player to post a double-double in the points and assists categories this year with 14 and ten, respectively. Fleming's dynamic performance came despite not practicing in three days due to a foot injury. Fleming had two steals and four assists in the 18-3 run that put Western up by nine points with 12:30 remaining in the game. With Furman closing in with 8:30 remaining, a Fleming and an assist to Dondrell Whitmore put the Cats back up by nine. The Paladins never came closer. Head Coach Phil Hopkins credited Fleming with keeping the Catamounts under control on the offensive end of the floor. "Joel had ten assists and one turnover. I can live with that," he remarked. °n paper, the Paladins had the size advantage over Western. The big threat for Krman was 6'7", 235-pound forward Chuck mcent, who has posted career nights against ttle Catamounts in the past. While the Cats allowed Vincent to sc°re 21 points, they never allowed him to get on a roll to bring the Paladins back in the game. The Catamounts' defensive strategy put mismatch on Vincent in the zone defense !, d0ubled ^wn on him with a bigger P'ayer every time he touched the ball. The Catamounts were only able to mount a 36-34 lead at the half despite the great shooting. The second half saw the Cats drop to 36 percent shooting while the Mocs shot 54 percent and 55 percent for the game. Chattanooga capitalized and outscored Western 39- 28 after the break to keep the Catamounts winless in Chattanooga in 24 tries. "I was pleased with our shooting in the first half [versus Chattanooga], but obviously we did not do a lot of other things as well as we led by only two points," said Hopkins. Two days earlier, Western saw their ten-game home winning streak snapped by the preseason conference favorite, Davidson. The Wildcats dominated Western on the boards and thus dominated the scoring with a 79-57 victory over the Catamounts. "The Davidson game was my worst nightmare come true," said Hopkins. "They got offensive rebound after offensive rebound and that just destroyed us." Bobby Phillips soared in the victory over Furman. Photo by T.K. Roberts. The Catamounts were also a player short for the Davidson game. Junior forward Leon Davis broke his hand in practice after Christmas and is expected to be out until for another two weeks. Lady Cats Fall to Davidson by Daniel Hooker In the first game of the weekend double-header last Saturday in Cullowhee, the Western Carolina Lady Catamount basketball team dropped a close game to the Lady Wildcats of Davidson College 85-78. Davidson led the majority of the game. Through the course of the game, the Wildcats stretched their advantage to as many as 13 points, but the Lady Cats' battled back only to tie the game. The Lady Cats' head coach, Maria Fantanarosa, commented, "Davidson's the top team in the conference; they were picked first. So, if we lose to them by seven points, and we're still getting better, we're going to be there in the end." Western Carolina put five players in double-figures. They were led by freshman APnl Fleck who scored 21 points and pulled down five rebounds. Lately, she has led the team in scoring- "I think that this the first time this year that we've put two games together back-to- back rcTxn „r„i Davidson). But, our weaknesses are still our weaknesses; take for instance turnovers and free-throws," stated Fantanarosa. "Those are the little things that we can control," she added. She went on to note that their weaknesses have gotten better game after game. Western nibbled at the Wildcat second-half lead but could only manage to tie the game up. The Lady Cats' managed to tie things up at the 7:56 and 5:37 marks, but the play of Jennifer O'Brien sealed Western Carolina's fate. Davidson's O'Brien posted career highs and a triple double with 27 points, 13 rebounds and ten assists. Senior LaSha Jackson, equipped with her face guard because of the broken nose suffered in the East Tennessee game, added 14 poi nts and grabbed eight rebounds. She also slightly sprained her ankle in the contest. Jackson's senior counter-part, Karen Mason, added 12 points for Fantanarosa's troops. Willow Russell and Beth Currence also scored in double-figures, with 11 and 10 points respectively. Tamara McMahan added seven assists. Coach Fantanarosa also got some good minutes off of the bench from juniors Amber Wheeler and Jayna Bryant. v m w I Jan. 15th Climbmax in Asheville $8/$15 Jan. 16th & Every Friday Skiing at Cataloochee $15/$20 Jan. 23rd Hawks vs. Celtics $28/$35 Jan. 24th All Day Caving Trip $12/$22 Jan. 21st) Horizons: Travel Slide Show A slide show presenlatioi of exotic NEPAL FOR MORE INFO CALL 7206 OR 7479 ■ft .M ►>-* With Dr. Gary White of the Geosciences Department e ©s so © « © p~ »o ! 3 J ^H ^
