  • WESTERN 22 CAROLINIAN SOCON VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT November 17,1999 Cullowhee to Host SoCon Championship by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor This Friday in the Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center, history will be made—and it doesn't involve Bob Dole. Cullowhee will play host to the 1999 Southern Conference Volleyball tournament for the first-time ever. Coming into the tournament undefeated, 20-0, in conference play, the Davidson Lady Wildcats have to be the favorite. Their 28 wins this season make a school record, and their three losses make a record for fewest defeats. They also broke their school record for winning percentage with their .903. "I think this is Davidson's tournament to lose," said Lady Catamount head coach Michelle Hansen. "Nobody has really touched them this year. But anything can happen. I'd be surprised if there wasn't at least one upset." However, the Lady Wildcats first-round match could prove to be interesting, as the l seeded Davidson takes on the #8 seed, UNC Greensboro Lady Spartans. Earlier this season, UNCG took Davidson to five games. Greensboro finished on the bubble, beating out Georgia Southern and The Citadel out for tourney seeds. They finished the regular season with a record of 14-16, 7- 13 in the conference. Another great first-round match-up is the first match of the day on Friday. The East Tennessee State Lady Buccaneers, seeded #4 after falling to WCU this past After going 10-2 at home, the Lady Catamounts Monday to end their regular season, will face the #5 seed, the Furman Lady Paladins at 10 am. Furman ended their regular season by beating GSU in four games in Statesboro on November 14. The winner of this match will play the winner of the Davidson/UNC Greensboro match on Semifinal Saturday. The 4:30 match pits the #2 seeded Chattanooga Lady Mocs against the #7 seeded Appalachian State Mountaineers. Chattanooga, who has won the tournament the past two years, enters with a 16- 4 conference record, while ASU is in with a 7-13 mark. The Lady Mocs enter the tourney on a down note after dropping a five- photo courtesy WCU Sports Information look to take the conference championship. game match to the College of Charleston. Appalachian State had to fight their way into the tournament, gaining a berth on November 15 by defeating UNCG, 3- 0. Hansen and the Lady Catamounts will play in the night-cap game against the College of Charleston Lady Cougars. WCU just beat CofC in Cullowhee this past weekend in straight sets. Charleston (18-11, 11 -9) split this season with Western, winning three-straight games in a 3-2 win at home before falling to WCU in Cullowhee. As for the Lady Catamounts, Hansen feels that there is still more to come. "I still don't think we've hit our peak as a team. But after this past week, with the exception of the Furman match, we've been playing well—we've played pretty consistent. Although J don't think we've hit our peak, I feel that we are close right now." Hansen seems to have her squad ready come post-season, as each of the last two seasons they have been the runner-up in the tournament. Western enters this year's tournament with a home record of 10-2 in their first- season in Ramsey. "We're going to feed off playing on our home court. We want to take advantage of that. We've told our team to use every game at home as a practice for the tournament. " Hansen also feels that, "Everyone is going to be gunning for the host school and everyone wants to go to the NCAA tournament." "This is a once in a college career thing, having the tournament here. It's not often that we get the opportunity to host it," said Hansen. She added, "There will be some great ball played and we need to maximize the home court advantage. It's been shown, we play better with a big crowd with us." Hansen's plea to the Cullowhee Valley is: "Please come out and go nuts!" Action gets underway at 10 am this Friday, and will continue through to the Lady Cats match at 7:30 pm. Saturday, following the football game at Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field, the semifinals will get underway at 5 pm. Sunday's Championship is set to start at 2 pm.
