Not that we ever forget the problem—it just seems that over the summer or Christmas vacation the issue settles to the backs of our minds only to be thrust again to the forefront in living color. Yellow, of course . I got my first "reminder" of the semester while parked in the "short term" parking zone in front of the H. F. Robinson Administration building. I was there for a short term conference with the Director of Traffic and Security of all people. I don't object to walking down to H.F.R. from my office, but I can hardly ever find a parking place anywhere near my office. And the only other alternative was behind the Baptist Church, way in the back, where my car and yours almost permanently reside. Sunday I discussed our situation with a friend from N.C. State. As you might imagine, I received little sympathy. He felt fortunate last week to find a space "so close" to campus—a mile and a half away. And I'm afraid that's the bottom line at the moment. No matter how much you and I hate to admit it, the parking at Western is better than that at any other North Carolina state school. No, that doesn't dismiss the problem. But, the issue is not simply finding a space. I'm assured there is always room in the freshman lot or In Walker overflow (but who checks, right?) The issue is finding a convenient space and they just aren't there. Providing new parking places is an alternative but as is so often the case, we are limited by a lack of funds. As I discovered this week, the state does not allocate money to ANYBODY for parking areas. Those funds must come from other sources—sources that wejust do not have. If by chance we could secure the capital the next step would be to locate an area easily accessible, suitable for parking, closer than Walker overflow and worth the difference. May I suggest car- pooling and, at the risk of sounding glib, a pair of reinforced tennis shoes. In all sincerity, if you have suggestions or ideas please stop by and I'll be more than happy to pursue them with you. Last week I attended the first Homecoming meeting of the semester. Committee members are already hard at work and are preparing for quite a show. Schedules of events as well as applications for queen nominations will be sent out shortly. There is no rush. The committee just wants to be sure that everyone has plenty of time to arrange schedules, and work on floats, etc., so I'll withhold further explication until a later date. Returning senators for the 1984-85 Senate held their initial meeting on Sept. 5th to begin preparing for the year at hand. New dorm senators will be elected within the next two weeks. The deadline for filing as a candidate is 5:00 pm, Sept. 10th. Application forms can be obtained from and returned to Vice-President Singleton's office on the second floor of the Hind's University Center. Filing is open to all students with a 2.00 or above and to all first term freshmen. Voting will take place at each candidate's dormitory. Refer all questions to Vice-President Singleton. by Rob Edwards K.JENKIM5 The 1984-85 Traffic Court has been assembled and will begin hearing cases on Monday, Sept. 10th. Last week the justices attended an orientation session hosted by Officers Slocumand Waldroopand by the Secretary of Trafficand Security Darleen Wallace. The SGA would like to thank these staff members for their cooperation. One of the recurring complaints about Western Carolina's Student Government Association has been that we fail to attend functions hosted, in part, for us by other schools and members of the surrounding community. We are attempting to provide better representation this year and we began two Saturdays ago. Several staff members and I accepted an invitation to spend the afternoon lunching and listening to local and statewide politicos strut their stuff in Sapphire Valley. If you're thinking. "Big deal! Sounds enjoyable," then you're right; it was. But don't get too worked up. We're obligated to accept many less alluring invitations in the not too distant future as well. Well, summer is just about over and it has been a good one! Now I'm looking forward to the Fall ski trips, football games in the cold air, homecoming and Halloween Parties: all things associated with the next season. Speaking of the upcoming season, being editor, I get to hear quite a bit of the "off the record" conversations around LMP, 9IFM and SGA with out divulginganything I shouldn't say Western is in for a rock'in semester. The optimism aroung these organizations and the Western . Carolinian is fantastic. SGA is out to really accomplish something for I the students this year. Rob Edwards and Diane Singleton plan to leave Itheir mark on this campus and improve the reputation of the Student Government Association. LMP is planning ambitious things for sure, and this is obvious by the first concert of the Fall. In my opinion, Starship is one of the best jacts ever booked at Western. Several LMP officials believe that a isuccessful Jefferson Starship show will herald perhaps an even better act later. Over at the radio station, things are finally moving into the technologically advanced world. 91 FM (it's no secret by now) will be going stereo this fall. They sounded great before but now they'll be putting out some competition for the other collegiate stations to hear. Here at the Western Carolinian we're all trying hard to work with these student organizations to achieve the maximum amount of cooperaion which will better serve you, the students. I believe this has cooperation which will better serve you, the students, I believe this has been accomplished. To me, working with SGA, 91 FM and LMP is like being around family. So, I can honestly say WCU is in for one fantastic year. In closing I would like to congrtulate Traffic and Security on gettingsuch nice, new cars. Too bad this money didn't go into perhaps building better parking spaces, but I'm sure the cars will be put to good use. And thank you. Officer Waldroop, for so promptly and graciously retrieving my keys out of my locked car. \
