  • March 25, 1982 8 Bit's 'n' Pieces Of Sports by Russ Randolph ...What a relief it was to hear that head basketball coach STEVE COTTRELL has decided to stay at Western' Coach Cottrell is by far, one of the best things that has ever happened to Catamount basketball, and to lose him would mean losing that great basketball spirit that has quickly developed in the short five years that Cottrell has been here. Coach Cottrell's Cats ha\ e improved every year, have set more records than any of the past WCU teams, and have had more talent than any of the past Catamount teams that have played in "Ready Reid" Gymnasium. Yes, we should all rejoice to the fact that Cottrell has decided to remain the driving force of that special Catamount basketball mania. Good basketball coaches are just too hard to find. Ask UNCC about that! teams, and the ladies are off to a fast 12-5 start. Coach BETTY PEELE'S team opened their season at the University of Florida's Lady Gator Invitational, and won two of five games. Since then, the Lady Cats have won 10 of their last 12 games, and have already brought home a second place trophy for their efforts in North Carolina A & T's Invitational Round Robin Tournament in Greensboro last weekend. The lady Cats will be participating in a tournament of their own this weekend here on campus and in Sylva.and if you get a chance. I strongly suggest you go and see these fine female athletes play. Good luck team, and keep that winning record going!! ..Western's TRACK TEAM, with more depth than in any of the past several seasons, participated in their first outdoor match of the season Wednesday at Furman. Fhe thinclads have been led during their brief outdoor season by the long and tripple jumping ol TRACE BARNETTE, the sprinting of ERIC RASHEED, GERALD HARP, DWAYNE NORMAN, WALTER SMITH, MILES NICHOLSON, AND LARRY JACKSON, while ROBERT MURRAY AND JEFF SIMPSON are pacing the team in longdistance running. It you get a chance, stop by the track and watch these guys practice in the afternoons I hev are something to see! SGT. JOHN STANFIELDS RIFLE TEAM will close out its season this weekend in the Western Carolina Rifle Conference Championship in Spartanburg. SC. Ihe rifle team has shown vast improvement in its second year of existence, and deserves a pat on the back for its fine efforts this season \fter a slow 0-5 start. WCU's GOLD TEAM finished 9th in a 14-team meet at limestone College during our Spring break. The Linksters were scheduled to host Presbyterian College in a two-way match at Maggie Valley Country Club today, so read next week's paper for the results of that match ...WCU'S mens VOLLEYBALL TEAM won their first two matches of the season in a three-way meet at East Tennessee State University last week. The wins came over ETSU, 15-1. 15-9. 15-5. and 15-8. The team is being coached for the second year by SGT. RICHARD JENKINS, and Jenkins is being assisted by DIAN HALLAS. "We've been improving every day." said Jenkins of his all walk-on team. "If we defeat East Tennessee next week, well have a good chance of finishing second in the conference, which we're trying hard to do." Jenkins cited the recent plav of MIKE WHITE, GREG FR1SBEE, JEFF ANDERSON, JOEL WILLIAMS, PAT O'HARA. and says coaching the team this season has been a real pleasure. The team will be playing their last match of the season on April 2 and 3. and unless a piayei is answered, thiscould be Western's last volleyball team due to the team cut-backs which are due to be imposed in April because of a division change Iron) Division II to Division I (NCAA), let's all hope the school officials elect to keep men's volleyball—it's a great sport!
