During that time, Catamount forward Bennie Goettie, who had a team-high 22 points, fouled out, and Western went down by as much as 14 — a 19- point swing — with a little more than two minutes left In the game. "We played well almost the entire game." Krusen said. "We played hard. Kenny Brown had a heli of a ball game. But we made too many mistakes." He added, "East Tennessee picked up Its level of intensity, and we didn't." Monday night's loss followed a 100-85 shellacking Saturday night in Boone against Appalachian State. The Mountaineers (8-4 and 16-8). who have lost just once In their last 10 games, took a big first- half lead and cruised from there against the Catamounts, whom they defeated by only one point in Cullowhee less than a amonth ago. The Catamounts fell behind by as much as 18 points in the first half and saw Goettie get into foul trouble early (he and Gault eventually fouled out). And despite a decent shooting night — Western shot 52.6 percent from the field for the game — the Catamounts had 24 turnovers and not enough opportunities to score. They reduced Appalachian's lead to nine points In the first few minutes of the first half, but never got back into single digits again. Robert Hill led Western with 17 points. Gault had 15, Geottie and Robert Hutchison had 13 each and Maurice Johnson had 10. Ben Miller had a career-high 24 for Appalachian, which hit the century mark for the fourth time this season. "We have a few more people than they do, and we were able to trade fouls with them," said Appalachian coach Tom Apke. The Catamounts will have two more home games after Saturday night. They will host VMI on Saturday. Feb. 27, and Marshall on Feb. 29. And if they don't win on Saturday, that will be it for '87-88. Notes: Hutchison, the team's best shoooter. Is In a shooting slump. He was three of 13 from the floor against East Tennessee and five of 15 against Appalachian State The Catamounts have never failed to qualify for the league tournament. . . .
