  • Western Carolinian/September 6, 1984 Duke - Indiana Marks and Remarks by Mark Haskett Sports Editor The 1984 college football season is well underway. It began with a mild upset last Monday night as the University of Miami, Florida upset the Auburn Tigers who were ranked number one in the pre-season polls. Last Saturday, Pittsburg, the pre-season third ranked team, was upset by Brigham Young 20-14. Western Carolina could not pull off another upset. Boston College and Heisman candidate Doug Flutie proved to be too much for the outmanned Catamounts. Flutie is not what everyone has said, he is more. Words cannot describe some of the things he does with a football. Western Carolina played an impressive second half and did show why they are ranked number one in the pre-season polls. All-American 254 lb. nose guard Mike Ruth met Cats center S 11 VE TAYLOR at midfield alter the game and paid TAYLOR a high complement. "You're the best center I've faced in a long time." commented Ruth. TAYLOR did do a superb job along with the entire OFFENSIVE LINE. There were also plenty of other complements to the Cats who outscored Boston in the second half. Flutie passed for 330 yards, but WCU quarterback J LIT GILBERT threw a couple of interceptions in the first half that hurt the Cats, but rebounded to complete 13 of 24 passes in the second half. GILBERT'S 305 passing yards were the most compiled by a quarterback against Boston College in three seasons. Boston coach Jack Bicknell said Gilbert was "the best drop-back passer we have seen in a long time." ERIC RASHEED'S 184 receiving yards in last Saturday's game is the third best effort ever at WCU. RASHEED now ranks fourth on WCU's all-time reception list with 137 catches. He could move into third place with six catches this Saturday and pass former mini-cat Jeff Dean. Freshmen tailbacks DAVID MAYFIELD and REX TONKINS made impressive debuts. MAYFIELD was extremely efficient as in his seven carries he scored twice, ran for a two point conversion, and picked up first downs on three occasions. TONKINS picked up 29 yards on his first collegiate carry and finished the game with 51 yards on 4 carries. Everyone should be making plans to attend WCU's home opener this SATURDAY NIGHT AT 7PM. The Cats will host Davidson and will be heavily favored. By the way, the Cats went into last Saturday's name against Boston College as a three touchdown under-dog. That l probably be the last time this season that the Cats will play the 'i -dog" role. V\i !' STUDENTS are reminded of the ADMISSION POLICY loi HOME, lootball games. Students will be admitted to any gate at Whitmire Stadium upon presentation of a VALIDATED ID CARD. Those students who have not picked up their ID card, or have not had their ID validated are urged to do so at Dodson Cafeteria. Only validated ID cards will be accepted for admission to home games. You are reminded that STUDENT SEATING is located in the area BELOW the rails in the lower sections of Whitmire Stadium. Four other Southern Conference schools were in action this past weekend. Appalachain State was trounced by national power Clemson 40-7; Furman surprised South Carolina State 28-10; UT- Chatanooga squeaked by SW Louisiana 9-7, and Marshall crushed West Virgini? Tech 33-10. Sports Lady Cats Lose Recruit Mike Creeson Billy Graham SPORTS INFORMATION Tammy Brown, a highly touted recruit for Wester Carolina University's women's basketball team, has been advised by her physical! not to continue to play competitive basketball and will not attend WCU. Brown, an all-state selection last season, has been diagnosed as having rheumatoid srthruis in both knees and her doctors have declared it would be too painful to try to continue playing basketball Mark Haskett Trish Howell "We are certainly sorry to be losing someone of Tammy's ability," said Judy Stroud, WCU's head women's basketball coach. "However it is understandable that she will not be able to play." Brown, a 6'2, 175 pounder played in the East-West Coach's All star game, the Blue-White All Star game, and averaged 19.4 points and 15.4 rebounds per game her senior year. She will attend Asheville-Buncombe Technical College. Jim Rowell Steve White The Citadel - South Carolina S.C. S.C S.C S.C S.C.
