  • win over UNC-Asheville By Andy Gambill + Wenewsmagazine The Catamounts welcomed the UNCA Bulldogs into the Ramsey Center on December 3 with a new look offense that included lots of three pointers. The Cats connected on 14 three-pointers, including 10 in the first half, to break the school record of 12 three-pointers. The Cats rode the three- pointer into a commanding 43-31 halftime lead before coasting into an 80-64 win in the second half. The Cats offense produced five double digit scorers led by Antonio Russell. Russell put up 20 points as he went 8 for 9 from the free throw line and nailed two of three from the three-point line. Corey Muirhead put together a solid all-around game off the bench as he had 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Muirhead hit three of four from beyond the arc. Also putting together strong games for the Cats were Kyle Greathouse, Eric Wilson, and David Berghoefer. Greathouse had 15 points as he nailed five three-pointers, while Wilson put up 11 its as he nailed three from long distance. Pre-season first team SoCon pick center David Berghoefer also got into the long distance act as he nailed a three pointer en route to 13 points and 7 rebounds. The Cats started off siow as they hit only 2 of 6 three pointers to begin with a 6-9 deficit in the first four minutes of the game. The Cats went on a mini-run over the next five minutes as they finally pulled ahead 14-13 using three-pointers by David Berghoefer and Kyle Greathouse. The Catamounts continued the surge by pulling away with a 12-5 run over the next four minutes. Catamounts hit school record 14 three-pointers in dominating 80-64 WCnewsmagazine Corey Muithead scored all 12 of the Cats points as he nailed three shots from beyond the arc, slammed home a dunk, and hit a free throw to add the twelfth point and give the Cats a 26-18 lead. The Cats continued to pull away over the next four minutes with a 12-6 run. This time the run was spurred on mostly by Kyle Greathouse and Antonio Russell. Greathouse nailed two three-pointers while Russell put in four points. With a 38-24 lead and 3:48 left in the half the Cats were outscored by the Bulldogs 7-5 going into the half to cut their lead to 43-31. The Bulldogs continued their better play starting off the second half as they cut the lead to 52-42 over the first five minutes of the second haif. The Cats struck back with an 8-4 run over the next 4 minutes to push the lead back to 14 at 60-46. The Cats used Russell and Greathouse again as Russell hit a three-pointer and two free throws while Greathouse chipped in a three-pointer. The rest of the game was relatively close as the Cats outscored the Bulldogs 20-18 over the last 11 minutes to win 80-64, The win pulled Western back to .500 at 5-5 and dropped the Bulldogs to 0-4 on the season. The Bulldogs had three double digit scorers in Joseph Barber, Joey Harrell, and Reid Augst. Barber led the team with 14 points, while Harrell had 12 points and Augst finished with 10. The win not only put Western back at .500 but also gave the Cats a years worth of bragging rights over their mountain rival. 2a.
