Western Carolinian/November_nL1982^ Opinion On The Latest Battle J» ■■' t • Kv>'^ "T jfpari v» Dear Editor, 1 am replying to two letters written last week slighting the Western Carolinian and suporting the SGA. I have had little respect for the SGA to begin with, but now 1 definitely dislike them after they once again showed their arrogance and flaunted their domineering buttocks in everyone's faces. First of all, what is this stupidity that the Carolinian does not earn its money? 1 see a new Carolinian every week, but what do I see the SGA doing? I would really like to know just what purpose the SGA serves the students of this university, that entitles them to such prestige and the bulk of the funding that goes to university organizations? I have yet to have benefitted from anything they have done, with one exception -1 had a traffic ticket repealed by Student court. However, I am disappointed to relate that the students who handled the affair were about as sincere and concerned about the matter as Australia's largest marsupials Fven though my ticket was clearly unfair, 1 was found guilty and had to take it to Superior Court there I was found innocent after nearly two semesters of wrangling. I soon discovered my innocence had nothing to do with the case Ihe next election (soon afterward) I was approached by some of the student court members and asked to be sure and vote for their choice, since thev had been SO helpful to me. Needless to say, 1 did not vote at all after that, ever again. Perhaps it is wrong not to vote in some people's eyes, but the few times 1 have voted 1 merely helped to elect another SGA official who was the same useless carboncopy as the last. It is discouraging to say the least. When 1 was first enrolled at this university 1 had the naive notion that the Student Government was composed of students fighting valiantly for student rights. I soon learned to the contrary that the SGA were nothing more than a bunch of suck-eggs to the administration, who are good at little else than bickering over money like vultures over a dead dog. They aren't satisfied that they already have the lion's share, but are now trying to cut into our school newspaper funding. This is an outrage that should not be tolerated by the students or the community. And what is this hypocrisy about the Carolinian being out of touch with the student? In the five-and-a-half years 1 have been at Western, our paper has never been as good and reported the facts as well since Larry Hardin became our editor. Before, no one's views about anything controversial were printed at all, and the paper was good for little else than lining parakeet cages. But now that some real issues are being discussed and people feel that they might speak out about questionable situations around them, the paper's funds are slashed. It looks to me like the administration has done this to keep the paper from gainingany power, and why else would theydothat unless they were afraid that one day the Carolinian might be printing the facts about their own goings' on? No sir, the Carolinian is not out of touch, not so long as it has an editorial page and employs people like it has been lately. But the SGA? Nobody ever knows what the hec they're up to, and if you try and ask them you only get evasive answers which are far from satisfactory. If the SGA was in touch, they would know that they are not nearly as popular in the average student's eye as they think they are. Not only did I wish to write this letter to vent my open distrust and dislike for the SGA, which has never done me anv good, but to ask the students if it has done anything to any ot them to deserve $10,000 and the crippling of our real voice, the newspaper. It's your money, don't let the SGA use it to their advantage against your own. 1 think we, as the students, should have a vote. A real vote too, not one that has to be recounted due to tampering; to keep either the Carolinian or the SGA. 1 have little doubt that the paper will be printing the results the week after the elections, and perhaps then we could till the University Center with something other than administration puppets. In final I would like to say that the SGA represents only one biased opinion, while the paper represents everyone, even their undeserved rivals in the SGA. So remember, SGA, if it wasn't for the Carolinian, you wouldn't have a medium anywhere as efficient for your strutting and preening as you do now. Sincerely, A. L. Batot (Shunkaha Witko) P. S.
