  • Western Carolinia/September 6, 1984 News Formal Bryan Devinney Staff Writer During the fall semester each year, many students decide to try to join a Greek letter Society. The fraternaties and sororities compete each year to have students join their organization. The men rushing fraternaties are ususally easy to pick out. The young women who are rushing sororities are not so easily recognized. Formal Rush for sororities is a 3 week long process which is designed to allow the amount of interaction time between the sisters and the rushees in the shortest amount of time. The requirements for a formal rushee that is a new freshman is a combined SAT score of 800 or higheror graduation from high school in the upper half of the graduating class. The requirement for a transfer student is a 2.00 QPR overall on all hours attempted and for a continuing WCU student the requirement is a 2.00 QPR on a minimum of twelve hours. The first event of Formal Rush is sign up. Sign up continues for four days and is simply the registration procedure for the rush process. The next event was "Meet the Greeks" which was the orientation meeting for the rushees. At this meeting a slide show was presented, the sororities participating in the Rush were introduced and the rushees were assigned to Rush Counsellors or Rho Chis. These Rush Counsellors each took 12-13 rushees and acted much like orientation leaders at Freshman Orientation sessions. 1 hev provided support, friendship and information. They arc there to information. They were there to answer question about the sororities and policies and they were not allowed to divulge any ot their conversations with the rushees. Following the orientation came the first round of parties. Attendance by all rushees of these Open House is manditory. The purpose of these open house is for thc sisters to meet the rushees and the rushees to meet the sisters. After the open houses the sisters decided who they wish to invite back to the second round, or skit, parties. Each rushee may only attend three skit parties even if she is invited to more. She must also be invited to attend. As stated in "Wheree Do You Go in a Rush?", the handbook for COMPUTER SOFTWARE AND COMPUTER BOOKS MbCVL JBooXstore mon- friday B-6 io-e Begins rushees. "Skit parties arc intended to give rushees more inlormation about each sorority and to become better acquainted with individual soiontv members." Each sororit) give three skit parties. following the skit parties is the third and final round ol parties. 1 hesc parties, called preference partus, are the opportunity for the sororities to present their serious side. I hesc parties are again by invitation only. Each rushee mav accept only two invitations and each sorority decides which rushees thev wish to ask to pledge and the rushees decide wich sorority is their first preference and which is their second preference to pledge. 1 he next morning the sealed sorority bid lists and the sealed rushee preference sheets arc- opened by a panel composed of Barbara Mann. Dean of Student Development, and alumni of each sorority. These bid lists and preference sheets arc then matched. I ater that day membership invitations are given out to those rushees that were matched to a sorority. I hat night a Bid Day Celebration is held to welcome the new pledges to the Greek System. Irom that point pledges arc under the pledge rules ol their sorority. of their sorority. Barbara Mann points out that this system is the same lor every campus across the nation that has any of the nationally recognized sororities. Ihe rules for Rush are set by the National Panhellenic Conference. This national cooperative governing body represents 26 national sororities. There are seven NPC sororities at WCU and of these seven, six participate in Formal Rush. These sororities are Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Pi Delta, Delta Zeta, Phi Mu, Sigma Kappa and Zeta Tau Alpha. The seventh sorority. Delta Sigma Theta, has special membership requirements including a minimum of 24 semester hours completed with a 2.5 QPR and therefore conduct their own rush in the spring semester. For those women who did not participate in Formal Rush, most sororities have informal rush which will be held later in the year. (cont. from pg. 1) should be alcohol centered. Basically, we need social functions that are not alcohol related. The frats and sororities are doing excellent jobs. With all of the things Rob has planned, and his intense desire to improve and enhance our school to everyone's benefit, students will grow to respect him and the SGA, and appreciate all it will do for them in the upcoming year. It's also the responsibility of students to promote WCU by being the best students and people thev can be-, and to extend the pride in our school to everyone we meet, now and after we graduate. SPECIAL ORDERS WELCOME For transportation pick up will be available in the upper parking . lot of Brown Cafeteria and at Helder West (toward Scott) • approximately 25 minutes before each assembly (except 11 AM • Worship) Returns in time for lunch. • Encore In '84 with Judo Club cl ADVERTISE!) Practices are held from 4-6 p.m., tuesdays, in the Dance Studio in Reid Gym. Su Baumann is the advisor coach. WCU's Judo Club will be affiliated with the Balsam Judo league. North Carolina Judo. Inc.. and United States Judo, Inc. The practices are open to all and beginners are welcome. Judo an Olympic sport, whose name means the gentle way. was developed from jujutsu in Japan in the late nineteenth century by Dr. Jigaro Kano. Kano, envisioning a sport people could practice with minimal risk of physical harm, codified permissible throws (nage wazak wrestling techniques (Katame w a z a), and joint-locking techniques (kantsetsu waza) while omiting all of the striking techniques (atemi waza) that form the essence of karate technique. The level of complication involved in judo technique lessens the possibility that judo be taught strictly for self-defense. Students with backgrounds in gymnastics, ballet, fencing, modern dance, and wrestling—in other words, people used to repeating stylized movements for maximum efficiency—tend to learn basic judo rapidly, thereby becoming able to distinguish themselves in white-belt level competition quite soon after taking up the sport. WCU Judo players will have the opportunity to compete regularly throughout the year in both collegiate tournaments and open invitationals. PRICES EFFECTIVE THRU SAT..
