  • Bits & Pieces Russ Randolph Sports Editor How bout them Cats! After struggling through their first two games in an over-powering ACC, Western is now proving that it can be a power in the Southern Conference by winning two consecutive conference games. The Cats arc now tied for second place in the conference with Furman, who comes to Cullowhee Oct. 15 for perhaps the biggest game of the year for WCU ...lt wasn't a pretty Win last week at Marshall for the Cats, but you've got to remember that Western is Without three of its best football players. LOUIS COOPER, BERNARD JONES, and MELVIN DORSEY were all out of the lineup last week because of nagging injuries, and are hoping to be well in time for the Furman game. The team really owes a lot to the back-ups for these players - BILLY RAY JONES, JOHN CAMBELL, and JOHN SURRATT - who are filling in nicely. Keep up the good job guys! ...THE CATS will be facing their fifth consecutive nationally ranked PUNTER this weekend in TENNESSEE TECH'S SCOTT MEADOWS. Meadows is ranked 12th in Division I-AA with a 41.5 average ...Western has had more than its share of problems with TECH in a series that began in 1971. the GOLDEN EAGLES hold a 5-3-1 edge, and the CATS have won only once in COOKEVILLE TENN. in four tries. That win came in 1974 when Western advanced to the NCAA Division II plav- offs WCU's defensive coordinator, MIKE HENNIGAN, played for TENNESSEE TECH and against the CATAMOUNTS in 1971 and 1972. He- went on to play seven seasons in the NFL lor the DETROIT LIONS and NEW YORK JETS as a linebacker WCU tailback LEONARD WILLIAMS has moved into sixth place on the career rushing list for Western. His 119 yards against MARSHALL gives him a career total of 1,660 yards. His TOUCHDOWN TOTAL is now 23, ninth best on WCU's career list Defensive standout RICHARD DUKES finally received the recognition he deserves this week by being named the SOUTHERN CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK. DUKES was very instrumental in holding MARSHALL to just 7 points last week, and is one of the most consistent defensive backs to ever play for WCU The WCU JV football team looked impressive in their 22-8 win over CARSON- NEWMAN Monday. Freshman HAYWOOD SMITH, KENNY EDWARDS, WES TREADWAY, TERRELL GRIFFIN, along with sophomores TIM MASSON, and JONATHAN CROOKS all showed great varsity potential for coach NATHAN WILLIAMS'squad The WCU CHEERLEADERS were among the few CATAMOUNT supporters in attendance at MARSHALL'S Fairfield Stadium last week, and were practically the only ones cheering. The West Virginia crowd of 10,000 grew silent as WCU blasted the THUNDERING HEARD, 21-7. The CHEERLEADERS said they didn't dknow which they enjoyed best - the game Saturday, or the night on the town Friday night Coach TRISH HOWELL and the WCU WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM also had something to cheer about over the weekend. The LADY CATS increased their winning record to 13- 5 by winning FOUR of FIVE matches in route to a second place finish in the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA CLASSIC TOURNAMENT held last weekend. Howell said she was very pleased with the overall effort of her team. Last season, at the same tournament, the LADY CATS lost all five matches DONT MISS tonight's VOLLEYBALL game in REID GYM. The LADY CATS take on UNC-CHARLOTTE in a 7 pm match that promises to be exciting! The WCU CROSS COUNTRY TEAM had a good showing in BOONE last weekend, despite a bit of bad luck. The team finished fourth in a five team match, but could have finished two positions higher. The bad luck came when runner STEVE RITTER slipped down an embankment on the course which allowed many runners to pass him, and that hurt the Cat's overall finish. RITTER was running well in the race, and could have had a much higher finish, which would have given Western far less points. In cross country, the team with the lowest score wins. Despite the bad luck, PHIL ROBERTS set a new school record while placing fourth while ROBERT BAKER placed fifth The Game: WCU Vs. Ihe series began in 1971 with a 27-17 lech Pro Scene Doug Irwin While 1 slaved laboriously this past Sunday, the Washington Redskins and the L..A. Raiders played what 1 hear was one of the best football games evcr.,1 could imagine. That's about as close as I got to seeing the game too. 1 did get back in time to see the dying moments of the Chargers-Giants game, the outcome already decided. Fortunately, and thanks to the wonders of modern communications, I witnessed the important portions of The Game via the "football highlights." What 1 saw was: one. a 99-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Jim Plunkett of the Raiders to his teammate, wide receiver Cliff Branch. The last time a 99-yard reception had occurred in the NFL was the mid-sixties. Two, Raider punt returner Greg Pruitt ran a punt back 97 yards. Most kick return touchdowns arc not that long. What did the Redskins do? Most miraculous of all, they won the game. They had a 20-7 lead early in the third quarter. The Raiders then went on a scoring tear, taking a 35-20 lead. The Redskins then proceeded to score the remaining points of the game, capping it off with Joe Washington's reception ofa Joe Thiesmann pass with 33 seconds left. Some of the Redskin players said this game was a bigger one than last year's Super Bowl victory over the Dolphins. They also believe it is the game that will put them in this year's Super Bowl. Maybe as a confidence factor, but 1 could not imagine it being a bigger game than the Super Bowl. You know how people kind of overreact when the adrenalin is flowing. After a game like that, who cares about the rest of the league, right? Well, I guess Dallas Cowboys fans do. As much as they are despised, they are undefeated after romping over the Minnesota Vikings, 37-24. By the way, it is the first 5-0start for the Cowboys since 1977 when they won the Super Bowl, lt seems that all the pre-season hype following the Cowboys and their drug-problem has had a positive effect on their performance. Maybe that is why Tampa Bay is 0-5 and most recently got clobbered by Green Bay, 55-14. They all are on drugs. How else could they get 49-points scored on them in the first half? The Bucs are supoosed to have some ofthe best defensive players in the league. After watching the Monday Night Football highlights, I can empathize. Two of those touchdowns were wrought by the Green Bay defense. How 'bout them Colts? Huh? It may not ever become a household saying (and 1 hope it doesn't) but the Colts name may again be acceptable to speak about again. They are 3-2 after upsetting Cincinnati last Sunday, 34-31. In the "reborn" department this week is the San Francisco 49ers. They defeated New England 33-13. and seems to be back in Super Bowl form. With the 49ers back to form, the NFC is shaping up to be an interesting battle between them, the Cowboys and CUSTOM T-SHIRT Up to 4 Colors All st Intramur DES ■HI ts, shorts, posters, etc. raternitles and Sororities Organizations ND ARTWORK AVAILABLE COMPETITIVE PRICES Contact Alan Moss - Art Department-Belk Building Or come by room 294 MINIMUM OF 10 SHIRTS 227-7210 the Redskins... Speaking of races, the much-published pennant races in baseball became nonexistent during the last week. All Philadephia and l.os Angeles had to do was watch Pittsburgh and Atlanta eliminate themselves. The Braves didn't get any relict pitching down the stretch, and when the Braves don't get any relief pitching, they don't get any pitching at all. In other baseball news, a group out ol lampa Bay is trying to buy the Minnesota I wins and move them to sunny Florida. The thing that gets me about this possible transition is that the city of Tampa Bay is going to build a stadium if they get a major league- baseball team. There is nothing wrong with that, but they arc wanting to build an indoor stadium. Now why would they want to build an indoor baseball stadium in Florida? Florida is where the sun shines, not where the snow falls. Who knows, maybe they arc trying to make the Minnesota people feel at home. They play in their own indoor stadium there. That makes sense. One final note: The Boston Celtics are going to pay Larry Bird fifteen million dollars for just seven years. There's no use in discussing the insanity of these kind of pro contracts. It's outrageous, it's disgusting, it's incredible and it's the kind of thing that only insane millionares would do. They run the country and now they run pro sports. victor) and in the last game played, last season in Cullowhee. lech won I7-I0. lech ahs won lour ofthe last live games played in the series including the last tow in Cookevillc.
