  • Page 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Cat Tracks BYKENBALL The WCU Gymnastics Troupe could be considered the unsung heros of this University. The members of this group, under the supervision of Dr. Otto Spilker, put a lot of time and effort into this organization. At the present, the squad consists of about twenty-five members, male and female. Recently elected officers for the coming year are: Presi- dent, Wayne Brackett; Vice- President, Eddie Thomas; Secretary, Helen Painter; Equipment Manager, Bob Stutts. I In past months the troupe has put on shows at the Camp Lab School, Sylva Webster High School, Swain High School and at the Hendersonville YMCA. These shows consists of demonstrations of the member's gymnastic skills, and demonstrations on how to perform various stunts. A great deal of effort and planning is required to put on one of these shows. Since only one high school in the western part of the state has gymnastic facilities, all the equipment used by the WCU troupe has to be taken apart at our gym, loaded on a truck, hauled to the site of the performance, and reassembled before show time. Water Polo Action Starts Intramural Water Polo Action got underway for the spring quarter as the Day Students sunk Theta Xi, 28-3. Jack Hawks took over the scoring lead for Uie Day Students with nine points, followed by Bo Davis with seven. Mike Stamey and Don Bate^ mandid the scoring for Theta Xi.*» Kappa Alpha, returning Champions from last quarter, looked stronger than ever as they drowned Alpha Phi Omega 44-0. Steve Loflin added 19 points to KA's total followed by Chris Smith with eight Pi Kappa Alpha downed Delta Sigma Phi in a close on. 22-20. The game had to go into an over-time, and was won for Pike by a goal each from Mc- Kinnon and Laidlaw. Ed Helms led Delta Sigma Phi with 14 points. Tau Kappa Epsilon started the quarter by thrashing Pi Kappa Phi, 30-13. Ivey Herrington was high scorer for TKE with 13 points. Mike Eudy led Pi Kappa Phi with six. WMSJ radio station recently pulled a boner. After telling of not being able to carry the Funeral services of Dr. Martin Luther King, the disc jockey put on the next record which happened to be "Get Ma to the Church on Time." The members are to be congratulated for this feat alone, not to mention the show itself. Dr. Spilker stated that they have shows planned this month at Tuscola High School and at the Canton YMCA. I feel that this group is doing a great deal of good for WCU. Although an audience might not remember how to do some of the stunts performed by the different groups, you can bet they remember that this was a group of athletes from Western Carolina University. Hats off to the gymnastics team! Yesterday and day before, a gymnastic clinic was held at WCU by Fred Martinez. Martinez has been a coach for eleven years. Five of these years were undefeated years in high school. The other six years were spent in college coaching. His team was NAIA champions for three years and were the National AAU champs. In 1967 Martinez coached the Pan-American Team and was an assistant Olympic Coach in 1964. According to Dr. Spilker, Martinez has directed his clinic primarily toward physical education majors andteachers. His aim was to develop the skills of those already interested in gymnastics, and create interest in teaching gymnastics. Martinez visited the Camp- Lab School and Sylva Webster High School to help teachers organize gymnastic classes. ^ Jim Hudson, Ken Pa at a half time show.
