h Thursday, November 719% Sports Stye mssttvn (Earnlintan WCU Cross-Country Teams Finish 3rd and 6th in Conference Meet BRIAN CLARK STAFF WRITER Western Carolina University hosted the 1996 Southern Conference Cross-Country Championships this past weekend. Bill Baldwin's second place individual finish, along with three other Catamount runners being named to the All-Southern Conference team, highlighted the blustery Saturday morning in Cullowhee. In the men's race, Baldwin took the lead about halfway through the 8000 meter (5 mile) race. With a course lined with cheering Catamount fans, Baldwin broke away from the pack and formed a 20-yard lead. Baldwin stayed in this position until the very end, when UT- Chattanooga's Nic Crider passed Baldwin, who was only two seconds off the winning pace with 25:50. Following the race, Baldwin commented, "I knew that to win the meet I would have to be far enough ahead at the four-mile mark. However, I knew that if Crider was beside me at four and a half miles, he'd beat me because of his speed." WCU teammates Turner Norris (2619) and Brian Clark (26:20) also earned all- conference status as they finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Freshman Andy Ramos (26:53,22nd place), and sophomore Jeremiah Buechner lady Cats Continue to Improve Volleyball Season And they're off! (27:19,31st place) rounded out the Catamounts' scoring contingency. The Catamounts were one of the team favorites coming into the meet, but fell shy of the goal as East Tennessee State claimed the title for the second consecutive year. The Cats placed third in the meet, as they were also defeated by Appalachian State. The Cats had beaten both ETSU and ASU earlier in the season. UTC finished fourth, followed by Marshall, VMI, Furman, Citadel, Georgia Southern, and Davidson. On the women's side, senior Kristen Savery earned All-Conference honors for the second year in a row. Savery placed ninth with a time of.18.57 on the tough 5000 meter (3.1 mile) course. Furman's Lynn Kepper Hudson claimed the individual PHOTO TERRY K. ROBERTS/WC title, winning the race in 18:19. The Lady Cats' next two finishers were freshmen Jenny Warford (in 27th place atl9:58) and Charlotte Robson (in 31st at 20:08). Emily Redmon (20:23, 34th place) and Lisa Karr (20:26,35th place) rounded out the Lady Cats' scoring contingency. The Lady Cats placed sixth among the eight competing teams in the championship race. Pre-race favorite Appalachian State won the women's championship, followed by ETSU, defending champion Furman, UT Chattanooga, Marshall, WCU, Georgia Southern, and Davidson.
