  • December 6. 1979/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/Page 9 $175,000 given to Center for Improving Mtn. Living Grant to help preserve WNC qualities A $175,000 Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation grant to WCU's Center for Improving Mountain Living for support of a Western North Carolina Tomorrow development program has been announced by Dr. H.F. Robinson, WCU chancellor, and Thomas Lambeth of Winston-Salem, foundation executive director. The WNC Tomorrow comprehensive development program is for the predominantly rural 17 western counties. It is aimed at improving overall conditions in Western North Carolina while preserving distinctive qualities of the region. The award to the Center for Improving Mountain Living (CIML)—which provides staff to WNC Tomorrow—is the largest ever received from a private foundation by the university or its units. CIML is a leadership resource and technical assistance center. The Z. Smith Reynolds grant will enable CIML to continue to provide four senior-level staff members to work with WNC Tomorrow as the 17-county leadership council launches its comprehensive program. The staff members are: —Thomas L. Mallonee, former congressional assistant to U.S. Reps. Roy A. Taylor and Lamar Gudger, who joined CIML as senior associate earlier this year to work directly with WNC Tomorrow. —Jane Horton, associate director for community development. —Clyde Ray, research associate. —Don Kelley, associate director for human resources. Smith Reynolds Foundation grant. Western North Carolina Tomorrow, an independently organized regional leadership council now identifying issues of major concern in the 17 counties, this year asked CIML to continue and expand its staff services. Award of the second grant by the Winston-Salem- based foundation was praised by Robinson and Richard B. Wynne of Asheville, president of WNC Tomorrow. Robinson said that the overall program "can be a significant demonstration of how the capabilities of the university can be extended to the region. Western North Carolina Tomorrow is translating the principle of service into reality. The university, through CIML, is eager to enter into this activity in partnership with the people and leadership of the region.'' Wynne announced the award at a meeting of WNC Tomorrow in Hendcrsonville Friday. He said the grant a "major encouragement to the cooperative efforts of the volunteer leadership of Western North Carolina." He said the grant will make it possible for WNC Tomorrow to move forward with work program proposals, taking the issues before the region that has been identified and developing alternative courses of action for consideration by public and private policy makers and concerned citizens of the region. In Winston-Salem, Lambeth said awarding of the second-year grant "reflects our continued confidence in the combined approach of utilizing the professional skills of the center, and the influence and standing of this leadership council as these two organizations together consider and develop alternative ways to confront major issues affecting the entire region." Freeman said the funds awarded by the foundation will enable CIML and WNC Tomorrow to develop work plans on seven major regional issues identified during the first year of WNC Tomorrow activity. They are (1) conservation and development of natural resources; (2) the need for more and better jobs; (3) strengthening small towns and rural communities; (4) increasing pride in the region; (5) improving educational opportunities and attainment; and problems and opportunities associated with (6) tourism and (7) transportation. Freeman said the work plans, based on objectives outlined in position papers already approved by WNC Tomorrow, will provide for the organization of task forces involving hundreds of persons from throughout the 17-county region. From Page 1 A gift of love Ms. Loy, who more or less coordinated the drive, the RA's were challenged to come up with a different type of program for their halls to participate in this year. The idea to sponsor a needy elderly couple this Christmas was suggested and was decided to be a worthwhile and stimulating project. Patti went to the Department of Social Services in Sylva and got the names of an elderly couple who were in need of financial assistance. She then made the initial contact with the couple. They were suspicious of Patti at first as they had heard of elderly people being ripped off by smooth, fast talking salespersons and solicitors, but after checking with Social Services and WCU, they were assured that Patti was there in good faith and that the gift she was offering was from the heart. She has been over to visit them several times since then. Director of Housing Randy Rice donated $40 from the Good Times Fund to get the ball rolling and from that $40 the tree, materials for ornaments, and other organizational materials were purchased. The RA's and residents of Third East and Third North Helder comprised the centra) group of organizers for the project. The ones who were mainly responsible for the effort are Patti Loy, Doris Fox, Debra Jenkins, Barbie Hullar, Penny James, Cathie Carpenter, Paula Shultz, Susie Searcy, Ginger Miller, Ruby Carter, Therese McHan, Nancy Higgins, and Connie Robinson. Bonnie Bronson stated that in all the time she has been involved in dorm situations, she had never seen a project of this kind "take off" and accomplish the kind of unity and purpose that this one has. Several of the RA's and residents of Helder are considering helping "Frank and Sarah" for the rest of the year and "adopting" them as their "grandparents".
