  • TheWESTERN CAROLINIAN VOICE OF THE STUDENTS VOL XXXIV NO. 19 Thursday, December 5,1968 CULLOHEE.N.C. 36 Are Selected For Who's Who New Center Restaurant To Open January 2 The University Center restaurant will open Jan. 2, announced James Kirkpatrick, business manager of Western Carolina University. The long awaited opening of the restaurant was made possible by obtaining a qualified chef in order to staff the establishment, Alf Roberg, originally of Norway and now a United States citizen, has been hired as the chef. Roberg, 57, comes to WCU from New York, where he was employed by B. Altman and Company, a chain of restaurants in New York City. Negotiations in the hiring of a manager for the restaurant are still in progress, stated Kirkpatrick. "But the restaurant will open in January even if I have to act as manager myself," he continued. The restaurant, seating approximately 140, will probably use students as waiters and waitresses. Roberg begins work Dec. 10, in preparation for the opening. Thirty-six students at Western Carolina University have been named to "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities", according to a statement from Dr. Newton Turner, Dean of Academic Affairs. The following is a list of the selected students who have met the standards in the fields of scholarship, leadership and character. The selection is also made on a basis of participation in extra-curricular activities. Six Attend SGA Returns From National Meeting By CHARLENE SMITH Six student government leaders recently attended the 5th Annual Conference of Associated Student Governments, of which WCU has been a member for three years. Those attending were Charlie Sutton, Bob Thomas, Cindy Edwards, Carol McRae, John Henningand Gary Mann. The group arrived in Washington, D. Con Wednesday, Nov. 27 at which time they registered and took part in a preliminary business session. On Thursday regional meetings and seminars were held. The seminars were concerned with such topics as Student Government and the Student, Student Involvement in the Community, and Student Rights and Responsibilities. On Friday the delegates visited the State Department where they were given a tour and an Operations Center briefing. .After this they saw films and took part in panel discussions. These discussions were centered on the American Foreign Service, military power and foreign policy, education and cultural exchanges, current trends in international Communism, and foreign aid. Also on Friday Secretary of State Dean Rusk spoke to the delegates in the International Conference Room, giving a review of world developments. This was followed by a question and answer period and a reception in the Diplomatic Functions Area, with an opportunity to meet Mr. Rusk informally. At the conference Charlie Sutton was elected Regional discussion of minority groups on campus. Attorney General Ramsey Clark was the key speaker. That night a banquet was held at which the new officers were installed. Student body President Char- Chairman. WCU is part of a five-state Regional including North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. On Saturday afternoon a seminar was held with discussions on the Youth Participation Act and extremist groups on campus. The highlight was a lie Sutton pointed out that there are only two national student organizations, ASG and NSA (National Student Association).
